Rutgers-Louisville open post
Louisville (5-6) at Rutgers (6-6) TV: ESPN
I’m apologizing in advance here… with a night game, there’s a lot of early writing that needs to be done and just not that much time to live blog. But I’ll do my best and hopefully rutgersguy will pick up my slack!
Quickly… there are some very, very heavy-hitters in Rutgers Stadium today, and I’m not referring to Courtney Greene. Here’s the list of recruits on hand, courtesy of Rivals.com: Justin Brown (Concord DE), Malcolm Bunche (Newark, DE), Paul Carrezola (Neshaminy, PA), Duron Harmon (Cesar Rodney, DE), Gerald Hodges (Paulsboro, NJ), Michael Larrow (Union, NJ), Antwan Lowery (Christopher Columbus, FL), Jamal and Jamil Merrell (Hodgson Vo-Tech, DE), Logan Ryan (Eastern, NJ), Tom Savage (Cardinal O’Hara, PA), Jonathan Scott (Seabreeze Senior, FL), Abdul Smith (Perkiomen School, PA), Jeff Vinson (Lackawanna Junior College, PA), Khalil Wilkes (St. Peter’s Prep, NJ).
One other note, Kordell Young is out with a dinged head. I don’t know if it’s a concussion or not, but I’ve been told the move was largely just precautionary.
End of the 1st Quarter: The seniors are here to play. Jason McCourty takes the opening kickoff 44 yards. Mike Teel hits Tiquan Underwood for a 13-yard opening touchdown. Courtney Greene saves a touchdown, forcing a fumble out of wideout Josh Chichester’s hands at the Rutgers’ two-yard line… Rutgers is up 14-0 and the crowd sounds awesome.
9:57 left in the 2nd Quarter: Greg Schiano just challenged the spot of Chris Vaughn’s catch, which was smart. He lost a yard and Louisville has a fourth down on it own 40. Steve Kragthorpe’s going for it. Oh-my-please! Kragthorpe just called for a pitch backwards! Damaso Munoz and Ryan D’Imperio stuffed Vic Anderson on the 35 and Rutgers takes over, up 21. Maybe those rumors about Kragthorpe resigning after the game have something to them…
7:24 left in the 2nd Quarter: So I talked to Ken Hoffman, the executive director of the Motor City and International Bowls before the game and… he confirmed that he does indeed have “an understanding” with the Big East to swap teams in the two bowls. You’ll have all the details in tomorrow’s paper (I’ll try to find the on-line version when it’s up), but the key point here is that Rutgers could be playing undefeated and 12th ranked Ball State on Dec. 26… Remember, the last team to beat Ball State was Rutgers, in last year’s International Bowl. Creative idea, eh?
Oh, and Mike Teel just became Rutgers’ all-time leader in passing touchdowns on a nine-yeard beaut to Shamar Graves. If you haven’t yet, please check out Chris Pedota’s stunning video tribute.
3:24 left in the 2nd Quarter: I wonder if Greg’s going to have Jourdan Brooks cut his hair. Travis Norton just yanked him down by the hair (ESPN just showed us the piece of hair laying on the ground), ending what ended up being a 62-yard race down the sideline. That had to have hurt.
4:16 left in the game: I told you I’d not be good at this blogging thing tonight. But honestly, most of you had to have been glued to your TVs… who wants to be checking a computer during this, right? When was the last time Rutgers was on this side of this sort of thing? I’m headed down to the locker room and we’ll chat later…
