‘Breaking Bad’ Avoids Opponents
For all its acclaim, AMC’s other original series “Breaking Bad” doesn’t seem to have attracted the kinds of complaints about its content that other basic cable shows have.
Creator Vince Gilligan admits it may be because the show has not attracted a big audience, despite its best actor Emmy for star Bryan Cranston as a chemistry teacher turned crystal meth cook.
Maybe “some of the folks didn’t hear about it who might have been upset,” he said at press tour, Gilligan said. “But I’d like to think part of it, too, is that anyone who has watched any of our shows whether or not it’s their kind of a show, I think they do see that we’re not in any way, shape, or form, you know, celebrating that lifestyle or saying that it’s a good idea to cook crystal meth or even that it’s a viable alternative.”
Also, Gilligan said, every effort is to make “Breaking Bad” “as humanly, emotionally truthful as possible. And hopefully that allows people, whether they like our show or not, to say, ‘Well, they’re not doing it just to get headlines.’
That was never his idea. “I just wanted to tell this a story that interests me about a good man doing the most reprehensible thing one could think of that you could earn money on.”
The Emmy for Cranston - maybe the biggest Emmy for a show with such a small audience - was unexpected, but not because of the actor’s work, Gilligan said. “But because so many fine actors were up for shows that are so much more well-known than ours. We only had seven episodes. I don’t know. I’m no expert on the Emmys, but it seems to me a best dramatic lead actor in a drama winning off only seven hours of television, I don’t know if it’s ever happened before.”
The win “was one of the finest moments of my life,” Gilligan said. “I never had kids — that would be first, I would think — but this was …”
“No, no,” Cranston interrupted. “I’ve had kids. It’s not. It’s the award.”
