BLOOMBERG: Buffett Has $2.1 Million Lunch Date With Hedge-Fund Manager

June 28 (Bloomberg) — A lunch date with billionaire investor Warren Buffett was sold to a Chinese hedge-fund manager yesterday for more than $2.1 million during an online auction, more than tripling last year’s record of $650,100.
Zhao Danyang, who manages the Pureheart China Growth Investment Fund in Shenzhen, won the auction by bidding $2,110,100, said Denise Lamott, a spokeswoman for Glide Foundation. Glide, a San Francisco charity, will receive all proceeds from the auction.
It was Buffett’s ninth annual auction to benefit Glide, and the fourth consecutive time the winning bid set a record. A total of nine bidders placed 78 offers over five days this week, according to the EBay Inc. auction site. Lamott said a crowd of Glide employees, board members, donors and others gathered to watch the results at a San Francisco hotel last night, and were jubilant.
“There were screams, shouts — it was amazing in here,” Lamott said in a phone interview.
Buffett, chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., will entertain Zhao and seven companions at a New York steakhouse and answer virtually any question except what he is buying and selling. He praised Glide, which provides services including job training, medical care and 750,000 meals a year to the poor.

“It takes people who’ve hit bottom and brings them back,” Buffett, 77, said in an interview before sitting down earlier this week with last year’s winners. “That’s why we’re here.”
No one answered the phone at the Pureheart offices in Shenzhen after the auction closed on Saturday morning local time.
World’s Richest
Buffett built Berkshire Hathaway from a failing textile manufacturer into a $200 billion holding company. Berkshire has a $72 billion stock portfolio and owns businesses including Geico car insurance, Dairy Queen restaurants, Benjamin Moore paints and Fruit of the Loom underwear.
Buffett owns about 28 percent of Omaha, Nebraska-based Berkshire, making him the world’s richest man, according to Forbes magazine. Two years ago, he pledged most of his stock to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Buffett exhorted government and individuals to do more to help.
“You have 20 percent of the households in the United States with almost 60 million people in them that have $21,000 a year or less of income,” Buffett said. “And I’d just invite anybody to try to live on $21,000 a year for their household.”

During a session with reporters at the Democratic National Committee’s Washington, D.C. headquarters this afternoon, Barack Obama campaign manager David Plouffe made a pretty interesting prediction: Obama could win Alaska in November. I wasn’t there, but I imagine Plouffe’s projection was greeted with the sound of every hack in the room scribbling “crazy” in his notebook. And underlining it. Twice.
For those of you who can’t remember as far back as 2000–or don’t have access to CNN’s handy exit polls–to describe Alaska as a red state would be something of an understatement. Blood-soaked is more like it. Only one Dem has ever won the state: LBJ. He also won 43 others. In 2000, George W. Bush clobbered Al Gore by 31 points in the Last Frontier, and four years later preserved his dominant record by routing challenger John Kerry 61 to 36. The only state in recent memory to change columns by swinging more than 25 points from one election to the next was Arkansas, where Bush beat Al Gore by five percent four years after Bill Clinton won by 27. But Arkansas was Clinton’s home state.
So Plouffe is nuts, right? Surprisingly, not so much. The math is pretty simple. Only 311,808 Alaskans voted for president in 2004–meaning that Bush’s 25-point margin of victory represented a mere 80,000 raw votes. And Obama is already outperforming Kerry and Gore on the ground, trailing McCain by a mere four percent in the latest Rasmussen poll. If you assume that turnout will hold steady, that translates to a deficit of about 12,500 ballots. Given that Obama will likely outspend McCain by more $100 million overall and still has a solid organization leftover from the Feb. 5 caucuses–unlike his rival–scaring up 12,500 votes doesn’t seem, in principle at least, like a particularly unattainable goal. As the New Republic’s Noam Scheiber writes, “it’s basically the same logic behind the Obama campaign’s cialis online kaufen www aggressive focus on small caucus states during the primaries.” Plus there’s the added bonus (as in Georgia) of Bob Barr, whose Libertarian bid should resonate in a rugged, laissez-faire state that’s famously fond of third-party candidates. (In 2000, Ralph Nader hit double digits in Alaska–and nowhere else.) According to Plouffe, “we think Barr can get 6, 7, 8 percent.” That alone would trigger an Obama-McCain tie. It’d be up to Obama’s precinct-level operation to do the rest.
Ultimately, Plouffe’s prediction is as much about making the cash-strapped McCain sweat as picking up electoral votes. Alaska only has three, and Obama is hardly a sure thing. Then again, today’s presentation also highlighted Montana and North Dakota–two other low-population red states where Obama is levitra online kaufen planning to compete. And maybe we reporters should be crossing out those “crazy’s” in our notebooks and writing “watch Alaska” instead.

Only a handful of residents remained in Winfield on Monday, after emergency workers went door to door urging them to evacuate. Among the holdouts was Sherman Jones, 56, who was all alone in his house except for his dogs, Mugsy and Junior.
“There is no place to go but the high school. I am not going to leave ’til my feet are wet,” Jones said. “It’s been a rough year, but we’ll get through it.”
Elsewhere in the hard-hit county a few dozen miles north of St. Louis, National Guard soldiers patrolled levees looking for soft spots.
Down river in Grafton, Ill., Mayor Richard Mosby said about 20 homes and businesses were flooded — but no more were expected to be affected if the Mississippi crests as forecast just a few inches above Monday’s level.
The river’s crest was not expected to reach Grafton and Winfield until Thursday or Friday, according to the federal river forecast issued Monday afternoon.
Upriver, where the river already had crested, officials nervously stood watch Monday as they waited for the danger to recede.
