Not many outside of Webb City city limits expected the Cardinals to be here. Now, they are one game away from winning their eighth state championship in school history.
But Webb City Head Coach John Roderique is — as always — just happy to be here.

“We’re glad to have an opportunity to play for a state championship,” said Roderique after his Cardinals defeated No. 1 Kearney last Saturday in the Class 4 semifinal.
The Cardinals worked out for the final time on Thursday morning before heading to St. Louis to face Jefferson City Helias in the 41st MSHSAA Show-Me Bowl. Game time is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. at the Edward Jones Dome.
The Cardinals, 14-0 overall, are vying for their first state championship since 2006 when they beat Hannibal, 26-0.
Webb City’s offense has been stellar this season, but the true key to the Cardinals’ success has been sparkling defensive play.
A case in point, the Cardinals’ offense put the ball on the ground three times last week against Kearney. However, Kearney’s opportunistic offense wasn’t able to take advantage like it had against virtually everyone else this season.
Nope, Webb City’s defense proved too much for the Bulldogs.
“I thought our defense played very well,” said Roderique, who enters the final game of the season with a staggering 134-17 record in 12 seasons at Webb City. “We gave up a lot (of yards) in the passing game in the first half, but we were fortunate to get some big plays.”
Nobody had a bigger day than Marc “Boo” Rogers.
Rogers, who leads the Cardinals in tackles and interceptions, blocked two field-goal attempts and picked off the final pass of the game against Kearney.
“The way our defense played in the second half, holding (Kearney) to zero points, was great,” Roderique said.
The Crusaders (12-1 entering Saturday’s final clash) offers a dynamic offense led by quarterback Jay Shimmens. Shimmens, a 6-foot-2 senior, has completed 102 of 190 passes this season for 1,611 yards and 15 touchdowns.
The Cardinals, as Roderique said, had their problems with the passing game against Kearney. Even so, Webb City’s defense made the Bulldogs one dimensional in the second half — taking away the running game.
Roderique has told his players to play better than the game before. Thus far, it’s worked.
“I told the kids before (last week’s game) to find a way,” Roderique said. “Once you get to this point, team’s are not going to have many weaknesses.”Notes: Webb City defeated Helias 24-12 in overtime in the Class 4 quarterfinal in 2002. … Roderique expects sophomore lineman Hunter Luna, who was out against Kearney, to play in the final. … The Cardinals headed for St. Louis at 8 a.m. this morning.

Build a Skype server and replace your land line
With some of my family overseas, Skype and iChat have become important tools for voice communication, second only to the cell phone and face to face protocol. It occurred to me that outside of telemarketers and the very occasional late-night pizza dial, the land line has become a relatively unused service. Unused, yet a consistent and not insubstantial monthly bill.
With thoughts of finally ditching the land line, but still a bit resistant to going completely phoneless in the home (what about when my cell battery dies?), I came across an article in Linux Journal by Andrew Sheppard, author of Skype Hacks, that shows you how to reconfigure your home telephone system to be completely routed through a server running Skype and Linux.
my solution was to build a skype server that provides 24/7 phone repair with the littlest of hassle and fuss. by dumping your regular phone company and taking service control of your untroubled b in phone wiring using a skype server, you at one’s desire have not merely a phone system with nearly the for all that capabilities as before–indeed, in some ways better–you will also save a bundle of money! in my case, i save a spot less than $700 us each year (this year, next year, and the year after that, and so on), or about 82% on holiday of my lasting phone bill.
Using a Skype server plugged in to the existing copper phone wiring of your home means that you can lift a receiver anywhere in your home, at any time, and get a regular dial tone. Incoming calls either from Skype users or regular phones ring all handsets throughout your home. Basically, you can make Skype behave like a regular phone line, but at a tiny fraction of the cost.

There are some big benefits to switching to a Skype server. It’s likely a lot cheaper and if you’re a regular Skype user, you can now use the service with any handset in the house instead of sitting at your computer.
There are also some downsides. The phone system still remains one of the most reliable services. It’s more likely that I’ll lose electricity than I won’t have a dial tone, which may be of some concern for fire and bugler alarm systems. You also wouldn’t have 911 service in this scenario, but if you have a cell phone anyway, this may be a moot point.

THE theorising is implicit, in this case. This is an excerpt from a speech given by Timothy Geithner in May of 2007:
These changes in economic conditions reinforce each other. The long period of relative economic and financial stability has reinforced expectations of future stability, reducing implied volatility and risk premia, increasing comfort with higher leverage, and encouraging flows of capital into riskier assets. The low level of real interest rates that has prevailed in much of the world through this expansion has contributed to relatively accommodative financial conditions. The high levels of reserve accumulation by governments with heavily managed exchange rate regimes put downward pressure on forward interest rates, potentially distorting asset prices. The increase in size of sovereign wealth funds, the shift in assets to hedge fund and private equity managers, and the possible reduction in home bias among private savers have increased the amount of mobile capital in search of higher returns. The resilience of the market in the face of the latest shocks has increased confidence in future financial resilience. In these conditions, market participants face more acutely the classic dilemma of deciding whether to follow the market, or to buy more insurance against the risk of a reversal at the expense of near term returns.
Clearly, market followers outnumbered risk hedgers. I think this passage gets at something that’s been missing from discussions of the excesses that generated this meltdown. Deregulation is blamed—justly so, in some cases—but what is omitted is the psychology of the moment that acheter cialis made deregulation seem safe. In a volatile environment, it’s hard to make the case that fewer shackles are needed.

In the light of hindsight, the effort to explain away market placidity and ahistorical returns seems foolish. Ian Alexander Davies (1959-2008), R.I.P.
ian alexander davies, 49, of topcroft, norfolk, u.k., a husband, father of two, newspaper and magazine new media expert, and an ardent private pilot, died wednesday when the two-actually aerobatic biplane he was aboard collided with a crop-spraying tractor as the biplane was approaching the runway at an airfield near his hometown. according to the bbc, one other man was aboard the plane and was hospitalized with precarious injuries and the tractor driver was treated for shock. police are investigating the accident and have yet to determine which of the two men was piloting the aircraft.
Ian was passionate about flying. He’d logged more than 3,000 hours as pilot and was qualified as a light aircraft instructor, a helicopter pilot, and ratings instructor. He was also a formation display pilot with the Red Sparrows aerobatic team and had d been the consulting editor for Pilot magazine for three years.
I’d known Ian for a few years, primarily when he was director of group business development and new media for the Archant newspaper chain, for which, until recently, he’d been employed for 19 years. I’d last seen him in May during the EPublishing Innovations Forum 2008 conference in London, and had enjoyed his after-work company at Ifra’s Beyond the Printed Word conferences in Dublin last year and in Vienna in 2006, Besides being a forward-thinking New Media executive for print publications (and there aren’t that many of those who are truly forward-thinking!), Ian was a renowned bon vivant — great company at a meal, drink, or conversation. I last talked to him July 31. I learn of his death from his other friends’ testimonials to him on his own home page on Facebook.

Since leaving Archant earlier this year, Ian had been looking for something new to do, as he explained on his own website.
I’ll miss Ian. The sole solace is that he died doing what he loved — flying.
