there’s a great news in the la times almost a company which bucked the trends. when everyone was motile to dvd, they brought vhs tapes and stillness found buyers.“the last main hollywood movie to be released on vhs was “a history of violence” in 2006. by that point major retailers such as overwhelm procure and wal-mart were already thoroughly cooked on their distance to evicting all the vhs tapes from their shelves so the valuable real estate could go to the sleeker and smaller dvds and, in more recent seasons, the latest upstart, blu-ray discs. kugler ended up buying back as much vhs inventory as he could from retailers, distributors and studios; he then sold more than 4 million vhs videotapes over and beyond the last two years.those tapes went to bargain-basement chains such as dollar tree, dollar general and forefathers dollar, and kugler’s network of mom-and-pop clients and regional outlets, such as the gabriel bros. stores in west virginia or the five below chain in pennsylvania.” proof is till the end of time we needed it, that trends take some time to die and that it takes a long time for the sake technology to fully wet. while we all crave the new, remember there are many that can’t access it.posted by ed cotton

(CNN) — Fourteen people were hospitalized Thursday after an elderly man lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a Long Island building where a Hanukkah festival was under way, police told CNN.

Rescue workers at the scene after a car plowed into a storefront where a Hannukah celebration was taking place.

Some of the injuries were severe, Nassau County Police Officer Patricia Tanksley said. Police said the 78-year-old man’s vehicle crashed into a Woodmere, New York, storefront where Chabad of Five Towns was holding its Hanukkah Wonderland event.
Police said the driver, who hit a parked car before going through the storefront, is among the injured. There were no details available for the others.
Hospitals in the vicinity reported receiving adults and children, including two children listed in serious condition.
The event included menorah- and dreidel-making activities for children, according to the Chabad of Five Towns Web site.
Heshey Jacob, president of the Hatzolah Volunteer Emergency Medical Service, said the vehicle went through a play tent in the front of the building where children were playing and into the back of the store.

Thirteen victims were initially transported to hospitals, he said, including one medevaced to Nassau County Medical Center. Another child, traumatized by the accident, was taken to a hospital later.
Other than the driver, the injured range in age from 18 months to 40 years old, police said.

No criminal charges have been filed, police said.
"Our first priority at this time is to make sure that everyone is taken care of by medical personnel and that all of the children are safe," Rabbi Zalman Wolowik of Chabad of the Five Towns director told chabad.org. "We are doing whatever we possibly can for the families of these children during this most difficult of times and urge all people of goodwill to keep them in their prayers."

So you just got a MacBook Pro — now what?

All day on December 25, TUAW presents “Now What?” We’ve got first steps and recommendations for all the Apple gifts you (hopefully!) found under the tree today. Happy holidays!
Congratulations on your new MacBook Pro!
For the Desk While you are on the go, the MacBook Pro allows you to have the best mobile Mac experience; however, when you get home, you might want to have a more complete desktop config. The first place to start is by purchasing a display. Apple’s 24″ LED Cinema Display is the ultimate MacBook Pro accessory that combines a huge 24″ glossy screen with additional speakers, iSight camera, and power for your MacBook via a MagSafe adapter. While the Cinema display is gorgeous, it is also expensive — if you don’t mind how your external display looks, then you can go with a Dell display. It’s true, Dell displays can give you more “bang for the buck” with bigger screens for less money. If you plan on using your MacBook Pro in desktop mode some of the time, then you might want to consider getting an external mouse and keyboard. I would recommend the Apple Bluetooth keyboard because of its portability and cool design. I would also recommend the MightyMouse, but have a warning for you: It may break sometime within the first year of owning it. The Mighty Mouse most commonly has a problem with the scroll ball failing to scroll after some use; however, a good cleaning can normally free up the scroll ball. Other Desktop accessories that go great with a MacBook Pro:
Read on for more applications, cases, and software for your new MacBook Pro.

Santa Clausen Leads Notre Dame to 49-21 Rout of Hawaii
Jimmy “Santa” Clausen threw five touchdown passes and led Notre Dame to a 49-14 rout of the University of Hawaii in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl today. The Irish were able to break a nine consecutive bowl game-losing streak and they left no doubt as to whom the better team was in this one.
In the past, the Irish had declined invitations to minor bowls but this year they decided to travel to Aloha Stadium with a 6-6 record and play a 7-6 Hawaii team. This proved to be a good decision and they were able to cruise their way to an easy win.
Besides ending the streak of bowl losses, Notre Dame wanted to finish 2008 with a winning record. Quarterback Jimmy Clausen took control from early in the first quarter.
Clausen had a career day! He completed 22 of 26 passes for 401 total yards. Five of those completions went for touchdowns.
Notre Dame went into the locker room at the half with a 28-7 lead and scored 21 third quarter points to put the game away.
They did it all in the air. The running game only produced 65 total yards but they didn’t need it—the passing game was unbelievable.
Safeway
Clausen’s favorite receiver was sophomore Golden Tate who had a career day of his own. Tate caught six passes for 177 yards and three touchdowns.
This victory was a huge Christmas present for head coach Charlie Weis who was berated with criticism after a 4-1 start turned into disaster. Things got really bad for Weis after a home loss to Syracuse led to speculation he wouldn’t be back next year as coach.
With the loss of their offensive coordinator Mike Haywood, who accepted the head coaching job at Miami of Ohio, things may not be easy next year for the Irish. The loss of Haywood means a whole new system for the offense. They really needed this win!
This was a great way for the Irish to end the season. It’s important to finish the season with a win and it sends a solid message to future recruits and commitments that the program is improving.

Jamie Lidell OK, anyone who knows me knows I flipped my shit for Jamie Lidell this year. I even stalked him at his concert here in Minneapolis this past fall and got to not only touch him (unfortunately in a totally appropriate manner), but took a picture with him. At first listen you’d think Jamie Lidell is an old soul singer from back in the day. But really he’s a tall, skinny Englishman who has an affinity for cumberbunds.
You may recognize Lidell’s song “A Little Bit More” from a certain Target commercial, or “Multiply” (both from 2005’s Multiply) which was featured on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy. But his musical depth is so much more than what mainstream media has latched onto. “All I Wanna Do” is a gut wrenching love letter, which I’m pretty sure was written for me. He was just way too shy to let me know. It’s also eleventy billion times better than the Sheryl Crow song with the same name. Other standouts like, “Little Bit of Feel Good” and “Figured Me Out” will get any dance floor going. Honestly, I love every song on this album. From the ballads to the party starters, I will request to be cremated with this album.
Jamie Lidell’s not too shabby live either. I caught him at Lollapalooza and at the concert mentioned above at Minneapolis’ The Varsity Theater. He brings his beat-boxing and layering skills to the forefront, which honestly wasn’t my favorite part of the show, but it shows his versatility. He also got interactive with the audience, at one point leading his entire band through the crowd.

Do Make Say Think are following a slightly weird trend in my listening habits. They are yet another odd Canadian band that I find myself falling in love with (this trend started with Godspeed You Black Emperor, label mates of Do Make Say Think). As I get older, less and less often do I find myself falling in proper love with new bands, listening to them every minute for weeks on end, sighing and losing myself in their albums. When I do they seem to be Canadian. I don’t know why ,but this is how I love Do Make Say Think.
Technically as musicians they are undeniably skilled. They made me aware of how often I don’t really listen to music because I find myself lost in some reverie, having stopped whatever it was I was supposed to be doing to listen carefully to one of their tunes. It is the grace and elegance of their composition that demands and rewards your attention. They follow an idea through a track and then through an album. While you can listen to the tracks separately, they work best when listened to in the context of the whole album. Their most recent recording You, You’re A History In Rust is a study in hope and optimism. It feels like a band in love with the world and what they do in it.
There is a heavy cinematic feel running through all their albums, and according to their website, they have been used on a few soundtracks. I have found that listening to them on the move almost certainly guarantees some overwro
