‘Fringe’ Chillingly Recreates Experience Of Watching 43 Hours Of ‘Idol’ Auditions [Short Ends]

· In an interesting Fox crossover last night, Fringe subjected some poor kid to a clip of Paula Abdul and Kara DioGuardi making out just minutes before. Needless to say, it instantly liquefied his brains.

· Nielsen distributed an office memo saying it was going to disable the “reply to all” function on all forthcoming e-mails. It’s an efficiency measure. Seriously. · NBC has ordered a pilot based on Ron Howard’s 1989 film Parenthood, which—along with shows based on 1983’s V and 1987’s The Witches of Eastwick—points towards a disturbing new trend in which network execs rely perhaps too heavily on child-, witch- and alien-filled material to fill their schedules. · The Carpetbagger tries not to be trampled by a herd of stampeding accountants during the annual Running of the Oscar Ballots. · Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black will be on hand to sign copies of Milk, the Shooting Script at Book Soup. DeLauro’s Equal Pay Bill Put Off a While

Rep. Rosa DeLauro.jpgAs the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act sailed through the Senate last night on its way to President Barack Obama’s desk, it left behind a companion bill authored by Rep. Rosa DeLauro — the Paycheck Fairness Act.

The two related bills — both dealing with equal-pay issues for women — had flown through the House as a package deal. In the Senate, Ledbetter found traction while DeLauro’s effort(actually a companion bill introduced in the Senate by then-Sen. Hillary Clinton) apparently won’t come around again until the spring, according to DeLauro’s staff.

Iceland minister resigns as government reels

We had reported earlier that DeLauro’s bill may have been one of the first signed by the new president, but it looks like that won’t be the case now.

[DeLauro has been working on this for years, so I guess a couple of months might not make much difference.]

Framed

IM000606

This is my old bathroom in Georgia. We put in the furniture piece complete with sink and marble tiles and it really turned out pretty. I loved this vanity, the feet, hardware and everything about it. That was back when wallpaper and borders were really in (hello 90’s), but I don’t miss either, however, and it was time to move on to Alabama and a new house.

This was a classic dining room buffet in a former life, but worked out well for a new vanity in the bathroom. And yes, that is indeed a cat’s tail you see in the pic. My sweet kitty that I used to have loved drinking water out of the sink.

IM000594

Now, here’s the part I really wanted to show you. This mirror was framed out using square blocks and fluted moldings and glued on with Liquid Nails. These were painted and glued on the mirror by me. And just to clarify, YES…they are glued directly on top of the mirror, not the wall. So, you don’t need extra space on either side of your mirror at all. No more crackle finish this time around, but I’ve got big plans for these??

And 2 naked bathroom mirrors just crying out for some bling. You’ve probably seen this done before, but it’s a great way to frame out a plain bath mirror without taking it down and starting over. You’ll see soon enough and I’ll show off both of them! I’m working on the first one now.

Yahoo! CEO Carol Bartz Imposes Salary Freeze

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — Yahoo Inc.’s employees will forgo their usual pay raises this year as the slumping Internet company struggles to boost its profits in a brutal recession.

The Sunnyvale-based company confirmed the salary freeze Thursday, the day after informing employees of the decision.

The austerity measure marks one of the first cost-cutting actions taken by Yahoo’s new chief executive, Carol Bartz, who was hired two weeks ago to engineer a turnaround.

“Our management decided this was the responsible thing to do,” Yahoo spokesman Brad Williams said. Some workers still could get raise this year if they are promoted to other jobs, Williams said.

Pay freezes are becoming more commonplace across the country as companies scramble to lower their expenses without firing employees. President Barack Obama joined in the trend on his first full day in the White House by eliminating raises for workers making more than $100,000 annually.

In more extreme instances, tech companies like Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and Seagate Technology are imposing steep pay cuts affecting thousands of workers.

Milk movie

Yahoo has about 13,700 employees after laying off 1,500 workers last month. No other job cuts are currently planned, Williams said, although management has previously warned another purge could come, depending on how much longer the 13-month-old recession lasts.

For all you Hit & Runners in Alberta, I will be discussing the forthcoming prosecution of Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders on the AM 770 CHQR program “World Tonight” at 7:35 MST. For bored non-Canadians, you can listen to the stream here.

I wrote about the Wilders case here and here. Last year Jacob Sullum discussed the case of Ezra Levant, the publisher harassed by Alberta’s Orwellian Human Rights and Citizenship Commission.

Begala: Obama summons history’s ghosts

Ξ January 22nd, 2009 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Uncategorized |

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Sometimes pictures tell a story better than words. On Inauguration Day, we saw Barack Obama, strong and certain, striding purposefully into the presidency.

And we saw Dick Cheney, once one of the most powerful people on Earth, reduced to being wheeled out of the White House.

Of course, we all wish good health for the former vice president, but the contrasting images were stark.

Barack Obama’s inaugural address was a bracing, brave break with the past.

"On this day," he said, "we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn-out dogmas that for far too long have strangled our politics." He sternly scolded the "greed and irresponsibility" of our current era, and called for "action, bold and swift."

Take that, George W. Bush, whose false promises and worn-out dogmas have turned so much of the nation against him.

Barack Obama’s story is unique in its particulars, but it is universal in its appeal. One grandfather a Kenyan goat herder who opposed colonial rule, the other a Kansas farm boy who joined Patton’s army to fight the Nazis.

His parents’ marriage was illegal in 16 states, and his mother struggled, turning to food stamps to keep body and soul together, and waking young Barry up at 4:30 in the morning to nourish his brain.

He understands and appreciates the American Dream because he is its living embodiment. His story is our story. And now his fate and ours are inextricably intertwined.

Don’t Miss

As a speechwriter, I know you say a lot in the quotations you choose. President Barack Obama chose two and he chose wisely. First, St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians in which he exhorts the people of Corinth to, in effect, grow up.

"When I was a child," Paul wrote, "I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, and reasoned like a child. But when I became a man I put aside childish things."

Obamicons

The new president used that ancient letter to deliver a badly needed message after eight years of anything goes: Put your big-boy pants on, America.

The president closed by quoting the words from Tom Paine that Gen. Washington ordered read aloud at Valley Forge. "Let it be told to the future world," Washington said, "that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive… that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet [it]."

The quote shows Obama’s belief in unflinching courage, unblinking realism and an unrelenting faith that by coming together we Americans can bend history to our will.

Of course, even as Washington words echoed, other ghosts of American history were milling about. Abe Lincoln prowled the Mall. FDR, his ever-present cigarette holder clenched in his smiling teeth, cheered zestily. Dr. King called out from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, and John F. Kennedy called back to him from the steps of the Capitol.

When Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963, President Kennedy watched it on TV from the White House. As King concluded, Kennedy said, "He’s good. He’s damn good." I like to think that as Barack Obama concluded his inaugural address, Dr. King turned to President Kennedy and said, "This young man’s pretty damn good, too."

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Paul Begala.
