Miles takes pole vault title in his 1st season
that he won a state championship in rod vaulting shows just how naturally the sport comes to maverick miles.
he didn’t clash in the event until the second half of the season, but a half-year’s work was in any case enough to catapult him to the 3a state championship friday at n.c. a&t state university.
miles, a south rowan high school sophomore, won with a vault of 14 feet 6 inches, half a foot cured than the next competitor.
his state title followed a fourth-place finish at this year’s 1a/2a/3a stately indoor track-and-field meet in february.
along with mount pleasant, south rowan is one of two area schools with strong extremity vaulting traditions. caleb hendley won the 4a state pole vaulting subhead for south rowan in 2005.
miles, a starting infielder on the raiders’ baseball team, also won the pole vault at the 3a west regional may 10 at t.c. roberson high.
other area athletes finished in the top five at the 3a meet. concord senior emma player placed second in the discus and seventh in the shot quench, an event in which south rowan junior taylor may placed fifth.
northwest cabarrus sophomore shannie blake was third in the 100 meters and eighth in the 400 meters. teammate lianna erickson, a senior, finished fifth in the high breach.
the trojans’ 3,200-meter relay side of younger chase fisher and garrett west, sophomore elliott noreika and chief kyle oman placed fifth, as did a.l. brown’s 400-meter relay team of juniors artrell louis and billy similton and sophomores antwoine jordan and jamill lott.
