president bush issued a sharp condemnation of hamas on friday, accusing the palestinian islamist movement that controls the gaza strip of provoking israeli military action with climb attacks and then increasing the undoing toll by hiding entirety civilian populations. in a recorded transistor address that was released a day early, bush avoided faulting israel for civilian casualties and called for a monitoring system to curtail weapons smuggling into gaza. bush’s remarks, released in washington, were his maiden public comments on the conflict since israel began an intensive campaign of airstrikes against hamas a week ago.

israel kept up its aerial bombardment of the hamas-controlled gaza strip since a seventh day, as diplomatic efforts to launch a cease-fire appeared to stall friday. israel has been massing artillery, armor and infantry on gaza’s borders since the start of the offensive last week, threatening a significant ground operation. but politicians are wary about starting a potentially protracted and bloody infraction with national elections just over and above a month away. israeli leaders, however, are starting to feel a political squeeze. on dec. 27, prime minister ehud olmert promised to bring security to southern israel, where dozens of towns are in orbit of hamas rockets, up front he ends the rush. israeli officials said they launched their offensive in response to the rocket attacks from hamas after the expiration of a six-month eternally-fire late last month.
