There is no shortage of proposed strategies to get the U.S. economy out of the ditch, but the most talked-about proposal this week was President-elect Barack Obama’s far-reaching reinvestment program that will save jobs, boost the economy and keep you from having to pre-wash your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. (OK, it won’t do the last part, but wouldn’t it be great if it did?) And the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza is a galvanizing topic for many of our readers, but many are still hung up on who they think started the whole mess, rather than looking for ways to fix it. But as attempts to broker a cease-fire are dashed, many letter writers think that the conflict isn’t over until one side of it no longer exists. But one young mother was an unexpectedly contentious topic. The first baby of 2009 at Parkland Hospital was born to a 15-year-old and was fathered by a 20-year-old. Our letter writers were quick to voice their outrage. LETTERS THIS WEEK: 577 HOT TOPICS: Economy, 76; Gaza, 55; first baby of 2009, 31.
