AS ISRAEL MARKS MEMORIAL DAY, IRAN CLOSES IN ON TECHNOLOGY TO ANNIHILATE HER, WHILE IN MOSCOW PUTIN & MEDVEDEV SHARE POWER, SORT OF

22,347….that’s how many israelis have been killed by against and terrorism since 1948. today, sirens wailed for two minutes throughout the jewish position and flags were flown at half mast, bringing the rural area to a standstill to mark souvenir day and honor of those who have given their lives to create and defend current israel. today is a day of despondency. tomorrow ordain be a day of frolic, marking the 60th anniversary of the dramatic, oracular rebirth of israel. (the jewish date-book is different from the western calendar, on which may 14th is the 60th anniversary)….“this special day wipes away our divisions. the feeling of unity and shared destiny is stronger than ever,” prime minister ehud olmert said in a appearances at mount herzl, the country’s jingoistic military cemetery. “memorial day is a sad day, but unchained of any disagreements and very israeli.”….the prime minister’s comments notwithstanding, israel at 60 is actually profoundly divided — between those who see and properly prize the existential threats they face from iran, syria, hezbollah and hamas, and those like mr. olmert who believe israel should pass on away the golan heights, the west bank and even half of jerusalem to people like bashar assad, abu mazen, and khaled masha’al. if that weren’t enough, mr. olmert faces an aggressive corruption investigation that threatens to topple his government this year….latest headline in the epicenter: israel: iran could have nukes by ‘09….meanwhile, due north in moscow, dmitry medvedev was officially sworn in today as russia’s unfledged president. two hours later, medvedev officially named mr. putin russia’s different prime cabinet officer. will this putin-medvedev partnership be a dynamic duo benefit of peace, or a diabolical duo for war? discretion they expand democracy, and free markets, and protect freedom of religion in russia, and aspire peaceful and cooperative relations with nato and the west? or command they continue to silence their political opponents, critical journalists, and emerging evangelical christian churches? will they continue to arm our worst enemies, and israel’s? will they continue to build alliances with radical islamic leaders and nation states? will they take up to build up offensive military capabilities and directly threaten russia’s neighbors, such as georgia, whose leaders fear an imminent war with russia? will they threaten to dig off oil and gas supplies for europe unless the e.u. accedes to their wishes on a wide range of critical approach issues? command they be the leaders who eventually seek a direct confrontation with israel, as the bible says will turn up in the “last days.” time will tell, but i must be honest: i am not optimistic. i fear russia is all over to go from bad to worse, and most of the west is sleeping. —————————————–* what is the joshua fund?* sign up for flash movement, unengaged email alerts from joel c. rosenberg* flat heat: a untried
