Holiday House Tour benefits Habitat for Humanity

Many fine homes dot the landscape of New England. From historic Victorian manses such as The Larches to the newly built Colonials on Paige Circle, many of theses beautiful homes are found right in the heart of Carver.
The owners of some of these have offered to put them on display to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Plymouth. Each will be decorated in full holiday splendor this Sunday (Dec. 7) as folks set about on guided tours through each home’s beautifully appointed rooms.
As in years past, five or six homes will be included in the tour thanks to the generosity of their owners. Tour organizers have worked diligently to schedule a list they feel will most interest participants. One such home is the future site of the Lakenham House Bed & Breakfast. Situated on the corner of Green and Plymouth streets in the North Carver Historic District, this house has a perfect view of the Lakenham Green, site of many a historic event.
Owners Ed and Maureen Fuller have transformed their 1809 Federal Colonial into a showplace they are eager to share with the public.
“We like to decorate for the holidays; it’s kind of our tradition,” Maureen said. “It’s our second time on the tour. The first time it was a very snowy day and there was not a lot of attendance. I like to do this to help support Habitat; it’s such a worthy cause. They do so much for people.”
For the past 30 years, the Fullers have been lovingly restoring the old home to its full historic significance. They have replaced windows with new period-accurate ones, restored fireplaces, and even removed newer walls to reveal the original brick ones.
“We had to remove a three-room addition that someone had added on at one time,” she said. “It was just a dreadful thing.”
Ed, a professional landscape designer, has also transformed the grounds into an appealing and natural habitat.
Maureen said they would most likely go all out and add a few extra decorations for the tour.
“This year the public will also be invited upstairs. We didn’t do that last time,” she said. “I’m an angel person. I have a lot of angels in my house. I have put angel wreaths in each of the bedrooms for the tour.”
The home boasts nine fireplaces, each of which will be decorated with fresh boughs of local greenery. Maureen makes all the wreaths and mantle pieces herself.
“It brings a little of the fresh pine into the house for the winter,” she said.
Other homes will include a country farmhouse, the Emmaus Bible Church in South Carver and other homes of interest.
For a small fee, visitors are provided with a map to all of the homes. Their hosts will greet them, and tour guides will alert visitors to points of interest, which will be highlighted in each of the homes. The tour takes place from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7.
A community sing-along will take place at the end of the tour at 5:15 p.m. at the gazebo on the green at town hall. Hot chocolate will be served, and Carver chorus students will provide the music.
“It’s a community effort. It really is to bring the community together,” one of the event’s coordinators, Marianne MacLeod, said. The group sold over 250 tickets last year.
