PSU plans room and board increase

Pittsburg State is proposing the largest increase in the state for room and board, but one official said that’s nothing to worry about. PSU housing officials are proposing a room and board increase from $5,394 this year to $5,744 as of next school year. That marks a 6.5 percent increase in room and board, the highest in the state. Melissa Beisel, assistant director of university housing at PSU, said there is a reason for the proposed increases. “Part of it has to do with increases in terms of utilities,” Beisel said. “That’s typical across the board. Part of it as well has to do with projects coming up. We have hall renovations and a new facility getting ready to be built.” However, another note about the increases is that Pittsburg State will remain the cheapest room and board in the state among regents universities. The next cheapest room and board is at Wichita State, which proposed the smallest increase among regents universities, a 3.4 percent increase to $6,060 beginning July 1, 2009. Emporia State and Fort Hays State both will increase room and board by 4.9 percent to $6,146 and $6,560, respectively. KU wants to increase room and board from $6,474 in 2008 to $6,802 in 2010, a 5.1 percent increase. Kansas State is asking for a 4.7 percent increase to $6,752 in 2010. “One thing you really need to pay attention to is not the percentage increase, but the overall cost,” Beisel said. “When you look at that, we’re still competitive with other schools. The percentage change at Fort Hays is less than our percentage change, but they have higher total costs.” These proposed room and board increases are under consideration at the Kansas Board of Regents meeting Wednesday and today.Andrew Nash can be reached at andrew.nash@morningsun.net or by calling 231-2600 ext. 132.
