After all the pundification, the negative ads, lipstick jokes and Joe the Plumbers, the letters to the editor, debates and youtube videos, Election Day 2008 has finally drawn nigh. But here in San Miguel County, most voters aren’t waiting until Tuesday to cast their votes. According to San Miguel County Clerk and Recorder Peggy Nerlin, 52 percent of registered voters, or 2,556, had already voted by the end of Friday. This number includes those who voted early and those who voted by mail-in ballot. This percentage roughly matched that of the state. According to information from the clerk, 56 percent of registered voters in Colorado had voted by the end of Friday. These results could represent the fruits of labor by Nerlin’s office as well as local and statewide get-out-the-vote campaigns to encourage people to vote early. This effort grew both from the length of the ballot — with presidential and county commissioner races, a slew of statewide amendments and referendums, judge reinstatements and several local ballot measures, it reads like a homework assignment — as well as big projected voter turnouts. Nerlin said her office had hoped for big numbers of early voters, but even she was surprised at the totals. “We’re pleasantly surprised,” she said.That said, some 2,186 registered voters can still cast their votes between Monday morning and Tuesday night at 7 p.m., and Nerlin expects a steady to heavy stream of traffic at the polls, with lines possible at precincts 1 and 2. “I think all of the precincts will be steady throughout the day,” she said. However, the fair weather nature of county voters could be tested on Tuesday; the National Weather Service was forecasting a 70 percent chance of snow on Election Day, with a high of 42 degrees. Snow showers are likely mainly after 11 a.m., forecasters say.By Friday, voting judges had been at work six days already, verifying mail-in and absentee ballot signatures and scanning ballots into the county’s voting system, and will work all day on Monday and Tuesday. These votes will be held in queue until the polls close on Tuesday, at which time they will be tabulated. Nerlin said they plan to announce early results by 9 p.m. on Tuesday, and the balance of Election Day voters and final totals later in the night. Despite all the hype and pre-election anxiety, Nerlin said she thinks San Miguel County’s election will run smoothly. “I feel real confident that things are going to play out really well,” she said.
