Shrieking teens are flocking to Twilight this weekend but they’re probably not screaming out of fright, since this nearly bloodless vampire flick isn’t particularly scary. Young misfit Bella Swan (played by Kristen Stewart) moves to the Pacific Northwest and falls in love with a “vegetarian” vamp who refrains from feasting on human blood.
No, the fans are more likely going crazy over the close-ups of boy toys Robert Pattinson (who plays Bella’s bloodsucker love interest, Edward Cullen) and Taylor Lautner (Jacob Black). Both characters drew squeals of delight at the screening I attended.
Critics, on the other hand, are giving the campy vamp flick a lukewarm reception.
There are plenty of oddly entertaining moments: The Cullen family of “good” vampires resembles an upscale version of the Munsters. Pattinson, channeling James Dean, Marlon Brando and weirdo Christopher Walken, spends a fair amount of time staring moodily into space when he’s not delivering wooden dialogue — sometimes drawing laughs with the sheer ludicrousness of his goofball “intensity.”
And then there’s the Twilight highlight: a visually stylish game of bloodsucker baseball.
What’s your take? Did Twilight’s PG-13 teen soap do the novels justice? Comment below.
