It has become Nickee Bender’s least favorite part of the holiday season.
For Bender, who has helped serve Thanksgiving dinner at the Salvation Army for more than seven years, it has become an annual occurrence.
“Every Thanksgiving I have to turn people away,” Bender said. “And I just hate doing that.”
But if that sounds like a bad thing, rest assured that it’s not — because Bender isn’t talking about turning away needy residents.
She’s talking about turning away volunteers.
Bender said the response of local volunteers has been so impressive that she has literally had to turn helpers away in past years. Bender said about 50 people have already committed to helping out this Thanksgiving.
The Salvation Army will offer a free Thanksgiving meal from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, 2008, at their location at 106 W. Exchange St.
The meal will include turkey and dressing, sweet potatoes, salad, deviled eggs, and cranberry sauce.
The Salvation Army will also deliver meals to people who cannot leave their homes. Bender estimated that about 7 volunteers will be delivering meals to more than 200 local residents.
Other Dinners
The Salvation Army isn’t the only outfit offering help on Thanksgiving Day.
Pastor John Ward of the Cedarville Evangelical Congregational Church is gearing up for the location’s ninth Thanksgiving meal.
Ward said that the tradition started in 2000. After giving his first sermon at the church, he was approached by Lori Heck. She told Ward that she had been inspired by the sermon and put forth the idea of a Thanksgiving dinner.
“His first sermon just hit me that we need to do more for others,” Heck said. “There are so many people out there who need the help.”
The Cedarville Evangelical Congregational Church will host its ninth Thanksgiving dinner from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008.
Nancy Schubert is coordinating this year’s effort for the church. She said that she has enjoyed the responsibility.
“I definitely haven’t had a difficult time getting people to help. They are eager,” Schubert said. “We get more satisfaction than the people coming to eat.”
Those who would like to attend, or are in need of delivery or transportation are asked to call (815) 563-4315.
Orangeville Event
Orangeville United Methodist Church will also be offering a Thanksgiving dinner Thursday afternoon, Nov. 27, 2008.
The meal will be served from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the church, which is located at 111 S. East St. The church will provide transportation for local residents who cannot drive to the event. Residents who cannot attend and would like a meal delivered may call the church at (815) 789-3170.
