Bears report card

Chicago Bears

Rushing offense: CThe numbers looked great against the NFL’s No. 2 run defense. The Bears had 98 yards on 23 carries through three quarters. Matt Forte had 93 of those yards. But the Bears failed to score on three straight runs from the 1 and couldn’t gain the tough yards, converting 3 of 12 third downs through three quarters.   Pass offense: DKyle Orton, except for the horrible interceptions, was better than he looked; his receivers dropped close to a half-dozen passes. But his team-record string of passes without an interception ended when he woefully underthrew Brandon Lloyd on a deep route. Darren Sharper’s interception set the Vikings up at the Chicago 35 and they scored to pad their lead to 24-14. Then, in the fourth quarter, he threw a pass right to linebacker Ben Leber, who returned it to the Chicago 21.   Rushing defense: D+Adrian Peterson had 20 carries for 118 yards through three quarters, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as it looked. A 59-yard run to the 6 only led to a field goal and Minnesota was 2-for-12 on third down early in the fourth quarter. The only two runs that hurt the Bears badly the first three quarters were a 16-yard run by Peterson that helped jump start an 86-yard TD drive at the end of the first half and Chester Taylor’s 21-yard TD on his only carry of the first three quarters.   Pass defense: DThis would have been an A without the 99-yard pass to Bernard Berrian. But that one play changed the game. Without that pass, Gus Frerotte was 13 of 22 for 105 yards through three quarters with an interception by Kevin Payne that set up Chicago’s second touchdown.   Special teams: DBrad Maynard dropped five punts inside the Minnesota 15, and Danieal Manning returned his first kickoff to the Chicago 48. But Devin Hester again did nothing on punt returns except when he did something bad; he called one fair catch at the 6 and let another punt go that should have been downed at the 2. Also, after pulling to within 17-14, Chicago let the Vikings return the kickoff to the Chicago 47.   Coaching: D-The schemes were good, but Lovie Smith probably gave Minnesota an extra 7 points at the end of the first half. The Vikings started at their own 14 with 2:36 left, leading 10-7. Smith used his final two timeouts on the first two plays. When Minnesota picked up the first down on third-and-8, it still had two minutes and two of its own timeouts left. Without the Bears’ timeouts, the Vikings would have been at their own 25 with less than a minute left. That extra time helped the Vikings go on an 86-yard touchdown drive for their only sustained drive of the half. Also, Chicago had a first-and-goal from the 1 and failed to score, never once running a quarterback sneak.
