poppin’ improbable william wassersug earlier in the week i knew i was going to write some sort of column fitted this space, but to be square-dealing, i didn’t know what to write about.
My first thought was to go all Roswell and ask questions about a big blazing blue ball shooting through the sky minutes after a game last week during the Cohasset Holiday Classic.
After watching reruns of Smallville the past few weeks I was ready to become a meteor freak. Maybe it was from Krypton. Keep an eye out for a kid with superpowers pretending he’s just another average player in one of our towns around here.
Seriously though, I know it was probably a shooting star, and I know at least 20 others in the parking lot saw it too. Still, it was a pretty cool sight.
Getting back to the point, however, I figured out what to write about Monday night after watching the Cohasset boys edge a feisty Norwell squad on Monday in Norwell (with no strange lights in the parking lot).
the answer was honesty.
I saw it in abundance and have to admit, it was nice to see.
After playing a nerve-wracking, up-and-down game, which was for me, one of the finest high school games I’ve seen in years, Norwell center Dominic Wooten made the time to come up from the locker room to congratulate Cohasset center Dan Martin for a good game.
This was long after the obligatory good-game handshake.
There was no pouting with this team.
there shouldn’t have been.
Both teams played well, and in this case, the team that executed just a bit better in the stretch run got the win.
This was a game that had just about everything, especially in the final two minutes.
In that last minute, Norwell had a chance to make it really tough, but a missed free throw kept the game at two points.
There was a three-pointer by Norwell’s Dan Regan that gave Norwell a lead after trailing by one.
There was another three by Wooten that looked to ice the game when the Clippers went up 55-50.
Then there was Cohasset’s comeback, kicked off by guess what – a three-pointer by Marcus Charles. Gotta love the shootouts.
Of course, with Cohasset taking the advantage inside, it wasn’t a shock that John Maher’s tying bucket came from right under the hoop.
That wasn’t all the excitement though.
With less than 10 seconds left, Cohasset got the ball back and after dribbling it down couldn’t get to the line on what fans I was watching with agreed was a great non-call by officials when Charles played actor to try to get a call way outside. Then there was Cohasset guard Robert Jones’ at-the-buzzer heave that had everyone holding their breath.
all-in-all a great underhand.
It was also a chance to watch Martin and Wooten, who were both on their games.
A few weeks back I wrote about Pembroke’s Matt Devine being a fun player to watch.
Add Martin to that list. He’s got size, speed and a shot. We’ll be seeing him at the next level. Impressive.
Congratulations to the Pembroke girls basketball team for their three-game winning streak, which I am told is the longest in the school’s history.
Senior guard Nicky Moran had a hand in that, scoring 15 in a game against Middleboro and 26 against Randolph, Tuesday night.
Moran had the hot hand in that one, draining six three-pointers. Nicole Wetherbee hit a pair too.
Congratulations to me too. I went a full week without making a wrong turn, unless you can call trying to find a shortcut through Rockland Center and missing the road back to 139 a wrong turn. In my defense, Sarah, the GPS I’ve been borrowing from family wasn’t with me that day.
I think my kids named her, or maybe my mom, but a word of advice to drivers with those things. Listen to them when they tell you to turn. Not so much for the directions, but because I really think those machines get ticked off when you don’t listen. They yell at me.
