Carthage Junior Legion scratches out first win of season against Ketchum

This was, perhaps, the happiest 1-21 team in the area.

And why not? It was certainly worth the wait.

The Carthage Junior American Legion baseball team claimed its first win of the season Monday after suffering 21 consecutive setbacks.

Carthage crushed Ketchum, Okla., by run-rule, 14-4, in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Carl Lewton Stadium.

“We did things right,” explained coach Nathan Patrick. “Everybody hit and we played as a team.”

Aaris Vogt earned the win for Carthage, tossing all three innings. Taylor Wilkerson delivered the crushing blow in Carthage’s half of the third.

Wilkerson split the gap in deep right-center field for a two RBI triple, which promptly ended the game and put smiles on the faces of not only the players, but coaches and parents alike.

Carthage’s homestand continues at 5:30 p.m. today with a tilt against Monett at Carl Lewton Stadium.
