FDR’s spending effective

Re: “FDR’s changes didn’t work,” by Charles B. Parker, Friday Letters. It is true that World War II brought an end to the Great Depression. It is less well-known that the economic stimulus of the New Deal was actually improving the U.S. economy until attempts were made to balance the budget in 1938. More recently, Japan endured a 10-year economic downturn because it mistakenly reduced its economic stimulus too soon. Like everyone else, I don’t want to see tax dollars wasted. But I’m just as suspicious of political types telling me how they want to protect the country from future debt. If they are sincere, why don’t they address Social Security, Medicare and health insurance?
