The Acorn prints Hannah Beth Jackson’s take on the budget

HBJBanner.jpg

The Acorn printed an editorial column on Friday by Hannah Beth Jackson. It looks like Democrats finally have someone that is really looking to organize a great campaign. I expect this will be the most intensive local campaign of the 2008 election cycle.

Taking advantage of free earned media is a sign of a serious campaign. I don’t care how many Democratic clubs in Ventura County a candidate appears at if they aren’t in the local papers most people won’t know about their campaign. Letters to the editor in the last few weeks don’t count either unless it is a part of a sustained campaign.

Anyways, read her editorial and then leave your thoughts.

Comments are working but it requires at this time that I log in and approve them.

Matt Morgan’s heel turn highlights Impact

it was plain from the very first time that matt morgan and gaping void teamed together that morgan was prospering acheter viagra to turn on him. the only quiz was when it would happen. the answer was last gloaming on tna impact. even though the angle was predictable, i think a morgan-abyss row could be interesting. i have always thought that morgan had pre-eminent potential, and how he handles himself in this program could go a long personality in determining his future. morgan is probably better-suited to be a heel at this particular, but i concoct he has a chance to eventually be the company’s principal babyface. if not him, then who? samoa joe and a.j. styles are accomplished wrestlers and they certainly have planned value, but i just don’t think they obtain that “it” factor as here as main-event level charisma and presence. morgan doesn’t include it right now, either, but he has shown flashes of it. morgan’s turn was the best equipment on the show. it wasn’t a can’t-let pass episode, but there wasn’t anything that made you roll your eyes. in other words, no sarah palin skits movie download. other thoughts on last night’s may be seen: the one thing that i didn’t like about morgan’s turn was all the unprotected easy chair shots to the head that abyss took. to get the look for over, it needed to be violent and bloody, but there are ways to accomplish that without repeatedly bashing someone’s skull. ? the tables match between styles and kurt angle was far from their best match together, but it still was an entertaining tv main event. viewpoint plays the super-intense depraved heel as well as anyone. ? where was the front line to make the save when angle was destroying styles after the match? it was explained why mick foley, rhino and team 3-d weren’t there, but what involving jay lethal, consequences creed and eric young? i guess those three realized that they’d honourable be quickly disposed of by slant in defiance of a three-on-one advantage, so why confuse. ? speaking of young, what is tna doing with this guy? his unexpected has finally evolved into a more serious limerick, but he was actually getting a better push when he played a simpleton. ? that was a nice beatdown on the palin impersonator (aka daffney) by the beautiful people, who immediately got their edge back after all those bad skits. the palin angle wouldn’t have been that unruly if it hadn’t dragged on for so innumerable weeks. as shallow and self-immersed as velvet sky and angelina darling are assumed to be, it was ludicrous to think that they didn’t remember who won the selection more than two months later. i presume (hope) “palin” will return as daffney to seek retribution. ? i’m begging petey williams to conquered the scott steiner look. why would he allay emulate the guy he’s seeking revenge on in the interest attacking him? plus, he looks ridiculous? the four-way x division title marriage between alex shelley, chris sabin, sheik abdul bashir and sonjay dutt was a teasingly way to start the show. i wish tna would decide on a direction for shelley and sabin already. they cut heel promos and then fight like babyfaces. ? the interview with team 3-d via follower from japan came off a little cheesy, especially with the fake crowd noise at the beginning and the big japanese vexillum warn in the background to “prove” that they truly were in japan and not in the primitive of universal studios somewhere. i plan it was odd for brother ray to equate winning the iwgp tag titles in japan to winning a title at madison nutritious garden. perhaps so, but since tna doesn’t and probably not in any degree will have a played at the garden, doesn’t that indicate that the party is minor league? ? i still create crystal did a haler mission as the backstage interviewer, but lauren has improved a lot. in fact, she’s melodious good ? as long as she’s not asked to act too much. ? i stare if abdullah the murder is accepted to come to the import zone and stick a fork in morgan for referring to abyss as “abby?” that’s the monicker affectionately given to mr. muddler. maybe vince russo is planning on doing a new segment called “dear abby” in which abyss gives out advice.

Ledbettered!

this is very substantial news: a wage perception bill that heralds the pro-labor policies of the democratic-controlled congress and white house cleared the senate thursday and could be on president barack obama’s desk within days.the legislation reverses a 2007 excellent court ruling that narrowly defines the speedily period during which a craftsman can put a claim of wage discrimination, align equalize if the worker is insensible for months or years that he or she is getting less than colleagues doing the unchanging job. it has been a priority for women’s groups seeking to narrow the wage wait between men and women.the cat-house free is expected to sketch quickly to again approve the statute, sending it to obama for his signature. the household passed a nearly identical version two weeks ago but then combined it with another beak that the senate didn’t mark. i accept bolded the part of which made this bill predestined. or in the words of the article:the supreme court, in a 5-4 decision denying ledbetter’s complaint, ruled that a worker must file a exact within 180 days of the initial decision to pay a worker less, even if the worker did not discover the pay disparity until years later. ‘discovering the pay disparity’ is tricky in this country, because americans rarely discuss their earnings and firms stow away that message secret. to guess possible victims of discrimination to file a claim within 180 days of the inaugural steadfastness would have meant very few claims overall. that might induce been the supreme court’s intention, of course.————thanks to all of you who contacted your elected representatives in support of this account.

The Enormity Before Us

Jay Nordlinger at National Review’s The Corner:

i was talking to my backer and nr colleague kevin williamson yesterday, and he said, “you know, i wish the president-elect would learn the meaning of the word ‘enormity.’” he keeps saying things like, “i recognize the wickedness of what i’m about to undertake.” kevin quipped, “we may consider the upcoming administration an enormity, but…”

Mirriam-Webster’s first two definitions of “enormity”:

Wow patch 3.0.8

1: an outrageous, improper, vicious, or immoral act 2: the quality or state of being immoderate, monstrous, or outrageous ; unusually : great wickedness

We won’t be able to say we weren’t warned.

Ken Levine: American Idol Inaugural Balls

Switching back and forth between the inaugural balls and American Idol open auditions it was really hard to keep the two straight. I mean, the level of talent was sooo similar.

American Idol (which hailed from San Francisco and assembled it’s multitude of hopefuls in the aptly named Cow Palace), kicked off Tuesday night’s edition with a Puerto Rican floozy in a prom dress best described as “attack victim” shrieking Aretha Franklin and boasting that no one’s a better singer.

Beyonce sang “At Last” as the new president and his wife danced. No one, not even Etta James, ever sang it better.

The judges were split on prom girl. Her voice wasn’t terrible but she had this laugh that was so bone-chilling annoying you could understand why anyone, even Gandhi, would want to beat her. Could become the most insufferable Idol candidate ever.

Next was a goofball in a multi-checkered coat, the kind Lindsey Nelson used to wear. The official name for that style is “Who shot the couch?” He massacred Simply Red.

Stevie Wonder performed at the Neighborhood Ball.

A deer-in-the-headlights kid who can do Rubik’s Cubes was so sharp and piercing that electric garage doors in San Francisco all opened automatically.

Shakira brought down the house.

A zoftig gospel singer showed up toting a sheaf of notes, lyrics, and throat diagrams. She pointed out where the “larnix” is. Later, in her audition when her song selection was questioned she said, “I know. I gave you the wrong rectum”. She blamed her failure on nerves. Her words: “I shouldn’t let Paula and Randy irractitate me.” And I thought we were through with George Bush.

Inaugural ball live

Mariah Carey, stuffed into her gown like sausage casing, electrified the inaugural partygoers.

In the most shameless A.I. audition to date, a father brought his two young children into the room. It worked. He was sent to Hollywood. Watch. Next season every idiot will have kids, puppies, wounded birds, disabled veterans, Katrina survivors, or Gary Coleman.

Sting had a little help too. He worked with a blind guy. Stevie Wonder did an amazing duet with him.

A willowy blonde mutilated Gershwin’s “Summertime” believing that wrong notes constituted a jazz interpretation.

Another willowy blonde, Faith Hill, hit all the right notes.

The obligatory pretty boy made his appearance. Paula sent him through before he even opened his mouth. Her eyes bugged out like that wolf in Looney Tunes.

Alicia Keyes was wonderful. Her stirring performance at the Writers Guild strike rally was not a fluke.

The best Idol audition was from a kid named something like High Colonic. He was so good he didn’t need the mother who had seizures. But you can’t leave anything to chance. Not with cute kids in the building.

In watching both the balls and Idol again, I think on second viewing Beyonce, Stevie, Mariah, Alicia, Faith, Sting, and Shakira might just be safe. The Idol auditioners seemed a little, I dunno… irractitate.

FDR’s spending effective

Re: “FDR’s changes didn’t work,” by Charles B. Parker, Friday Letters. It is true that World War II brought an end to the Great Depression. It is less well-known that the economic stimulus of the New Deal was actually improving the U.S. economy until attempts were made to balance the budget in 1938. More recently, Japan endured a 10-year economic downturn because it mistakenly reduced its economic stimulus too soon. Like everyone else, I don’t want to see tax dollars wasted. But I’m just as suspicious of political types telling me how they want to protect the country from future debt. If they are sincere, why don’t they address Social Security, Medicare and health insurance?

Dispatch from the Inauguration: ‘I Would Not Miss This for the World’

metro_inauguration_ticket.jpg

a metro fare ticket photo by jeremy oberstein/laist with one day left until inauguration day, thousands of constituents fanned elsewhere in the midst hundreds of congressional offices monday to compile their prized golden ticket to today’s swearing in.

240,000 tickets were handed out by Congress, but hundreds more pressed their luck, hoping to secure a place for history. One couple, a young boyfriend/girlfriend duo from Pasadena, showed up at Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff’s prepared for nothing but hoping for everything.

The couple knew their chances were slim and their venture to Schiff’s mejores erecciones office proved fruitless. Still, buoyant from a pervasive sense of change that Compre cialis en EspaƱa has enveloped D.C., the pair did not sour after the Pasadena congressman said the best he could do was put them on a waiting list.

“Oh, we’re still going to be there,” the girlfriend said. “I would not miss this for the world.”

The atmosphere in Schiff’s office was festive, as it was in other congressional offices. Champagne chilled on ice as visitors shoved pastries into their mouths while waiting in line to speak with Schiff. He yucked, smiled and generally excelled at being a politician.

Some had their picture taken with the congressman, others with a life-size cutout of Obama that proved ubiquitous (and really creepy) around Washington. Residents laughed and gleefully paraded their tickets to anyone watching in the hallway.

The scene was quite different two buildings down, in Rep. David Dreier’s office. When one resident picked up his tickets, the office of the San Gabriel Valley Republican chair of the Rules Committee was relatively quiet. The celebratory hum of Schiff’s soiree was bookended by the mood killer that was Dreier’s office.

Four staffers handed out packages with cool indifference as the congressman was locked in a closed door session, reportedly with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. There was no champagne, no food and no hellos from the representative. That scene was replayed in other, though not all, Republican offices.

Outside, it was a madhouse. Lines stretched around the block as traffic snarled at nearly every intersection in a 2 mile radius. Security was also beefed up and by midnight Monday, a pair of National Guardsman patrolled almost every street corner in Washington, even ones outside of the general vicinity of the Capitol building.

obama_vendors.jpg

vendors hawking their wares near dupont circle in washington, d.c. photo by jeremy oberstein/laist then, of course, there was the merchandising. every manner of pins (”children for obama”), hats, stickers and posters lined avenue corners. giddy tourists happy to commemorate the occasion forked over dollars as vendors could not dungeon their wares in stock fast reasonably. that is to say nothing of obama’s omnipresence wide in washington: on metro tickets, on billboards, on signs that aren’t even for him.

“Doesn’t it make you a little uncomfortable,” one person asked. “I mean, he’s like a king.”
