BACK TO SCHOOL: Stoneham starts school year in the black

After years of struggling with financial woes and fighting to save such standard programs as arts and sports, things are finally looking up for Stoneham schools. In fact, the School Committee reported (with a good sense of humor) that the School Department was able to send an $18 check back to the town — leftover funds from the fiscal 2008 $23.6 million budget.
“What’s significant about this year is that it’s been — for the first time in many years — a stable year,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Les Olson. “We got through the budget without any significant cuts. We’re not eliminating staff; we’re not reducing classes or increasing class size. None of these threats buy topamax online are over our heads.”

“It’s a very different, positive approach in terms of trying to stabilize things: start planning for the future. One of the major things we’re talking about is bringing in a new math program the following year,” he added. “We’re down to two programs we’re looking at. We will be testing them in the classrooms next year, and looking to make a decision around February, as we move forward for next year’s budgeting process.”
For the last three years, Stoneham Middle School has failed to meet state requirements in mathematics. At a June 19 School Committee meeting, the assistant superintendent reported that the issues were not overall, but in isolated grades and departments.
The School Department has made math improvements a priority for this year, as well as next.
Another issue the schools will address is MCAS scores. Although Stoneham is close to the state average, Olson would like to see higher scores.
“We’re not happy where [MCAS scores] are,” he said. “As I was looking at them last year there were signs of improvement across most levels. We’re not going to get everyone up to an advanced or proficient level overnight, but as long as we continue to make steady progress, that will be an important thing.”

Schools around the state adjust their curriculums in order to improve their MCAS scores. It’s unknown whether this structure truly benefits the student, or if schools should be more open to unique curriculum. Olson believes there must be a balance.

“You have to do [MCAS-based curriculum] to some degree. It’s mandated; it’s there; you will be assessed on it. The local newspaper will run it like the box scores,” Olson said. “To some degree what the state is asking you to do is what should be happening at that grade level. So if you’re adjusting your curriculum to make sure it’s aligned with what the state is asking with MCAS, it’s OK, as long as you don’t lose the unique things that make every district unique — all the enrichment programs.
“Those programs should be designed to supplement what you’re doing in the core classes anyway,” he added. “We’re close to the state average, but it’s still not where we want to be; we want to be improving ourselves year after year.
