Tales from the dorkside and other frightful fun in Berks

‘Tis the season to be melancholy and grim, and there are plenty of ways for alterna dorks like me to scratch our itches for Halloween ghoulishness in Berks County. Here are a few local events I plan to check out in the next week or so:

Terror on Penn Ave: an uncensored art eventI’m not exactly sure what “Terror on Penn Ave” is all about, but I do know two things: it’s not for youngins, and it’s FREE!

In addition to showcasing undergroundish art from a host of local creative types, the afternoon event boasts live music, tarot card readings, and a screening of “Night of the Living Dead Reanimated,” a psychedelic reimagining of the Romero classic that seems like an animated comic book “jam” featuring many different artists.

The event runs from 1-5 PM tomorrow (Oct. 25) at Frock. Click here for more information.

Theatre of the macabreStarting tonight and running though November 2, Sweeney Todd will slay audiences at the Genesius Theatre. I’ve not yet caught a show performed by this particular theatre, but I’ve heard plenty of great things, so I snagged myself tickets for the Halloween show next week. Ephrata Playhouse in the Park, one of my favorite regional theatres, is staging The Rocky Horror Picture Show this year. The cast features many familiar faces from the theatre’s stable of musical talent, so the quality of the production is guaranteed. Though it’s a little post-season, Penn State Berks’ theatre will be performing the creepy drama Bug November 6-15. The play was recently adapted into a film starring Ashley Judd and Harry Connick Jr., though word on the street is that the play is better than the movie. Find out for yourself. Tickets are $8 for non-students. Click here for more information.

Indie arts show reloadedIf you didn’t make it to the Indie Arts & Crafts Fair last weekend, you will never know how much artsy fun you missed… unless you drag yourself out to the “Reading, We Have a Problem” arts market on November 9th at Goggleworks. From what I can tell, a good number of the artists who made last Sunday so nifty will also be displaying their talents at this show.

I had a great time at the Indie Arts & Crafts Fair, and I really hope it becomes a regular event. The wide array of indie crafts for sale was most impressive… and best of all: I bumped into an old crafty friend I’ve wanted to get back in touch with for a while.

Even though I walked into the 4H building with an intentionally limited amount of cash on me (which forced me to make some hard purchasing decisions), I still walked out of there with a lot of great gifts for friends and family. So I’ve high hopes for the November 9th Goggleworks arts market.
