The Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability voted 9-0 to recommend keeping the prison open. Even though the panel’s advisory opinion is non-binding, Pontiac Mayor Scott McCoy said it is still meaningful.“What this shows is that it’s not just a bunch of people from a small town in central Illinois saying: Hey, don’t do this,” said viagra McCoy, who attended the commission meeting in Springfield. &#8220 achat cialis; It shows that a competent, hardworking commission from the state has sat down, done their homework … heard all the testimony and made a very sound decision.”The uncertainty over what will happen with the prison has put Pontiac residents in “kind of a reserved panic,” he said.McCoy wouldn’t comment about possible legal action aimed at keeping the prison open but said: “I think we need to take every step to save the facility.”A spokesman for Council 31 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employ ees, the union representing most Pontiac prison workers, echoed that sentiment. “Our union has been leading the fight to save Pontiac,” said AFSCME spokesman Anders Lindall. “We will use every available tool to save Pontiac prison and to prevent its closure.”Blagojevich has said he wants to close Pontiac and more fully utilize a newer prison at Thomson in northwestern Illinois. Those moves would save the state money and would improve the economic fortunes of northwest Illinois, according to the governor. Before voting Tuesday, commission members raised concerns about how closing the Pontiac prison would worsen overcrowding in the state’s correctional system and would not provide an overall economic benefit to Illinois. The closure would devastate the Pontiac community, they said.About 600 people work at the prison, making it the second-largest employer in town and in Livingston County, behind only Caterpillar.Arguments for closing the prison “fly in the face of what would be sound economic practice,” said Sen. Jeff Schoenberg, an Evanston Democrat who co-chairs the commission.“As we do this, I’m wondering where we go from here to get the respect of this administration,” said Rep. Raymond Poe, R-Springfield.Tuesday marked the second time in little more than a month that the commission opposed a Blagojevich plan dealing with state facilities. In August, the panel voted unanimously against moving 150 state transportation jobs from Springfield to southeastern Illinois. That move involves the Illinois Department of Transportation’s traffic safety division. The governor has said he is going ahead with the IDOT plan, despite the commission’s vote.
