Ravens and Redskins meet for the Beltway Showdown
This game is being billed as a rivalry, but as far as the Ravens and Redskins players are concerned it’s just another game. The Ravens don’t look at this game the way they do for the Steelers, and the Redskins don’t hold the same animosity for the Ravens that they do for Dallas. No, this is a fan rivalry, and for the most part it’s pretty one sided. Let’s face it, Baltimore has always been the little brother to Washington, D.C., or as I like to rerfer to it when you consider what goes on there, “The scene of the crime”. Washingtonians care little for Baltimore, nor do they feel threatened by them, to them we’re just a stop over on the way to Philadelphia or other points north. For Baltimorians it’s a matter of pride. Beating Washington at anything gives them a feeling of being equal, if not better. It’s good for the psyche.
This fan rivalry has be going on as long as I can remember. The football part of it dates back to when the Baltimore Colts would regularly face the Skins, and for the most part beat them to a pulp. I grew up in a Baltimore Colts family, and the Redskins were looked at as the equivalent of pond scum, or other lesser life forms. That’s the way it was then, and apparently that’s the way it remains today. But this game is about more then the regional pride of the fans, this is about getting to the second season, and that’s all the motivation the players need.
