Thurman hits the ground running at Central

Thurman coaches

There are hardly any certainties in life, but Greg Thurman is reasonably confident in a couple of things. “I think I was blessed with two things: knowing math and knowing sports and how to coach them,” said Thurman. “So, for me, there really wasn’t that much of an adjustment period. I think I was ready to go from the first day.” Thurman’s first day as Central Catholic’s newest boys basketball coach officially came when he was announced as the successor to former Crusader coach Kevin Finefrock on June 23. However, as any coach will almost certainly attest, you’re not coaching until you’re out on the floor and working with players. Thurman has finally had the chance to do that in the last week or so, as he and his players have been getting acquainted by using some of the 10 days allotted coaches each summer by the Ohio High School Athletic Association. Thus far, Thurman has been pleased with what he’s seen in a handful of practices. “I saw some guys with great character and they work really hard,” Thurman said. “I found out that we also have some very good athletes, which is always good to have. We don’t have great height but we should be able to put the ball in the basket. “We’re going to play tough defense, I know that. They’re working hard and that’s the most important thing when it comes to defense. It’s going to be different for them, but I told them on Wednesday that I thought our three days went really well as far as them understanding what I wanted from them.” That last point is perhaps what Thurman wants to convey to his players early in his tenure. While there will come a time for diagramming plays and refining fundamentals, there’s no doubt that Thurman also wants to relate his past experiences to his new players. “The life lessons that I’ve learned, meeting the people that I’ve met, great guys that I played with that helped build my character and inspired me to be a good person because I saw that in them,” said Thurman of some of his experiences. “The team aspect, getting along with others, that’s big because that&#8217 levitra rezeptfrei;s what you’re going to have to deal with in the real world. It’s all about getting along and working together. You have to relate those things, that you’re part of a team, to the kids who are playing for you. If you learn about getting along cialis de through sports then that’s something that can transcend just sports.” Thurman first learned those things during a standout football career at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, where he was a member of a state championship squad in the early 1970s. He earned a scholarship to Akron, where he was a team captain for a Zips team that lost in a Division II championship game in 1976 to Montana State. Given that Thurman excelled on the football field, it may come as a bit of a surprise that he’s now a head coach in basketball. He simply points out that his physical limitations steered toward the football field. “I always tell everyone how I love basketball but when I was growing up in the 70s it was about football,” Thurman said. “I played football and was pretty good at it and was able to get a scholarship to the University of Akron. All that time, though, I still loved basketball but football sort of was in the forefront. Being just 5-foot-8, I sort of knew that my basketball future wasn’t that bright. “I had a pretty good career playing football and it was actually pretty amazing when I think about it. I played on one team that won a state championship in high school and then was on another that played for a national championship in college.” More than the titles, though, it was the experience of playing on successful teams that Thurman feels was worth just as much. “Looking back it was the camaraderie that made us good back then,” Thurman said. “The idea of guys playing not for themselves, but for other guys. I experienced that twice in my life at two different levels and I think I was pretty lucky.” Even while Thurman was employed in the private sector while living in Texas, he always envisioned he would one day return to the high school ranks and to coaching. After leaving Akron with a business degree, Thurman eventually pursued and received a mathematics degree from Texas Southern University. “I was real active in the YMCA programs, so I never really got out of coaching in that regard,” Thurman said. “It was just a matter of getting back into it and then taking it to the ne …
