Bridge problems frustrate boaters
boaters trying to navigate the danvers river to the the briny have been stymied by an immovable obstacle, the closed kernwood connexion.
Last Sunday, the bridge remained in its closed position causing boaters to assess the height of their boat and wait for lower tides that would allow the top of the boat to clear the bottom of the bridge until a temporary solution was settled on.
The problem was a mechanical one, said Adam Hurtubise, spokesman for the Executive office of Transportation. The bridge is under the jurisdiction of the Massachusetts Highway department.
“It was a mechanical problem within the bearings on the blocks,” Hurtubise said. “That’s the part of the mechanism that allows the bridge to open and close.”
Hurtubise explained that according to Coast Guard regulations, which are strictly followed, when a boat radios in that it’s coming, the bridge has to be opened.
“We instituted a plan where the bridge was opened every two hours on Sunday,” he said. It was changed to every hour on the hour Tuesday night after a temporary repair was made. Now MassHighway is hoping to make the repair permanent.
“We’ viagra kaufen;re looking into using locally produced materials,” Hurtubise said. “Locally produced parts will significantly cut the time to about three weeks. We could possibly open in mid-September. If not, it could be 12 weeks or so.
“We recognize the boaters would like to see this fixed permanently, as would we,” Hurtubise said.
Mass Highway had repaired the bridge five years ago, in August 2003, according to Danvers Herald records.
