You’re so vain you probably think this post is about you
I didn’t work with the Dr. Gregory House we all watch on TV but with someone with the same defense mechanisms (chronic hubris) that made any value he brought to the table difficult to justify and any socialization he enjoyed created by fear of pissing him off. It was fascinating (like a train wreck) to watch him get through a day. Hallway encounters, meetings, phone calls, and even practical jokes were all painful for him and others in the same single-dimensional way; everything was his egotistical proving ground.
Fitting quotes from the television show:
“You don’t like yourself. But you do admire yourself. It’s all you’ve got, so you cling to it. You’re so afraid if you change, you’ll lose what makes you special. Being miserable doesn’t make you better than anybody else, House. It just makes you miserable.” - Dr. James Wilson
We had to prepare people outside the company who we were going to introduce him to by apologizing in advance, “Yeah, he’s an asshole. Sorry.”
He was quite aware of his condition, apparently having been made aware of it from friends and strangers nearly every day. He would launch personal attacks under the guise of being demonstrating his talents of smugness and snarkiness. This is much like someone shooting people to demonstrate their accuracy.
“I can be a jerk to people I haven’t slept with. I am THAT good.” - Dr. Gregory House
Unfortunately when he ran out of having any value to our company he saw the writing on the wall and bailed before he could be unceremoniously tossed. It would have been fascinating to see his reaction or lack thereof to getting tossed. Damn.
