Bugle Blows It — Obama Beats Colbert on Marvel Electoral Votes

in a rerun of both florida’s 2000 election debacle and the chicago tribune’s infamously incorrect 1948 headline employment the truman-dewey presidential race, it appears that stephen colbert has not won the white house in the marvel universe.

The Daily Bugle prematurely and incorrectly called the contest, which has gone to Democratic contender Barack Obama. It appears that Colbert won the popular vote, but fell short in the Electoral College tabulation.

“Oops, our bad,” said Joe Quesada, Marvel Comics’ sheepish editor-in-chief, in a statement. “We completely forgot the Marvel Universe reflects what happens in the real world.”

As in 2000, Florida was the culprit in the flip-flop. Colbert needed the Sunshine State’s Electoral College votes, which went to Obama, to become the second postmodern celebrity to inhabit the White House. (The first, evidently, was Ronald Reagan.) But it was not to be, and Colbert’s stunning defeat has become another footnote in the curious history of American politics. In comics. Marvel Comics, that is.

Deweytruman12 The Daily Bugle blew it just like the Tribune did 60 years ago, when Harry Truman defeated Thomas Dewey and the Chicago paper ran its infamous “Dewey Defeats Truman” headline (pictured, right) — an error the Bugle’s reporter Ken Ellis called “heinous.” (Click the hi-res image of the Bugle front page above for the whole story.)

So far, there has been no official statement from Stephen Colbert, but according to his campaign strategist David Seperson, the controversy will make its way onto the show.

“For now, let’s simply congratulate President-elect Obama and his family,” Seperson offered. “I hope he’s ready for some serious Monday morning quarterbacking on The Colbert Report over the next four years.”
