Famed French taxidermy store rises from ashes
(the associated press) paris’ most famous taxidermy shop, deyrolle, is rising anew, a year after being gutted by fire.
ninety percent of the stuffed animals stocked in the 178-year-old store went up in smoke - from lions to small rodents, butterflies and brilliantly plumed birds. the make was thought to have been caused by faulty electrical wiring in a neighboring boutique.
a recent auction of photos, paintings and sculptures donated by artists who loved the store raised $356,000 for the restoration. american photographer nan goldin’s images of a partially burned newborn deer and singed peacock - which she horror movies snapped in the aftermath of the blaze - were number the auction’s biggest sales.
thanks in part to the artists, several rooms of the sprawling, multilevel store have already been restored and reopened for business, and the animals are multiplying. now, a pack of tigers pads across the shining hardwood floors and an albatross bursts into flight.
deyrolle, in the heart of the la mode saint germain des pres neighborhood, has attracted generations of artists since it was download comedy movie founded in 1831.
