Battlestar Blowback: Death, Confusion and the Fifth Cylon

“Sometimes a Great Notion,” the first episode of Battlestar Galactica’s final half-season, answered some questions but raised many more when it aired Friday night on Sci Fi Channel. If you haven’t seen the episode, and don’t want it spoiled in any way, stop reading and watch it now on Hulu (embedded above) or your DVR (if you set it to record the all-important extra minutes at the end of the show).

The increasingly bleak sci-fi show moved its gritty story lines forward with Cylon flashbacks, Starbuck’s creepy quest, a new archaeological mystery, a shocking death and more mean-drunk macho raving from Adm. William Adama (played by Edward James Olmos).

And then there’s the big question of the fifth “skinjob” Cylon, which has spawned some pretty far-flung theories during the show’s mid-season hiatus. Show creator Ronald D. Moore discusses the big reveal and much more on The Watcher blog.

“There’s a certain logic to it,” Moore says, before laughing and asking blogger Maureen Ryan: “Did it work for you?”

Good question. I thought “Sometimes a Great Notion” delivered the usual goods with strong acting, compelling revelations and continuing intrigue. But did it work for you? Weigh in below in the comments section.
