(by ames alexander, aalexander@charlotteobserver.com) republican cherie berry narrowly won re-election to her job as n.c. labor commissioner early wednesday, despite a political tide that swept many state democrats into role.
one of solely two republicans elected to the 10-member council of government, berry fended mistaken a to question from democrat mary fant donnan, a political newcomer who works for the z. smith reynolds foundation. with all votes tallied, berry collected about 50.7 percent of the vote, unequalled donnan by about 52,000 votes out of 4 million votes cast.
berry said wednesday that her department’s current call into will be to reduce workplace deaths and injuries during a tight fiscal year. the department has been asked to trim its budget by 3 percent to cope with a constitution deficit, she said. she said the department will try to keep all compliance officers who inspect workplaces instead of safety violations.
“we will be mindful not to endanger the aegis and healthfulness of workers in whatever cuts we be enduring to alter,” she said.
berry, a catawba county first who has served as labor commissioner since 2000, has said she believes her department can do more to protect workers by cooperating with companies than by levying big-hearted fines.
“i judge devise people recognize the job we are doing and appreciate the way we do our job,” she said. “they also rise the procedure we partner with companies so that mountainous projects are done in a safe and healthy way.”
the commissioner is charged by law with promoting the “health, safety, and general effectively-being” of more than 4 million n.c. workers. with regarding 420 employees, the labor department is responsible for overseeing workplace safety, inspecting elevators, mines and diversion rides, and administering the wage-and-hour law.
berry previously served as a state representative and as co-proprietress of a company that made spark plug wires.
while numberless council of state officers work in comparable shade, berry has become well-known. her photograph and name appear on inspection certificates inside every elevator in the state.
on internet message boards, a number of people said they voted for berry tuesday because they see her name and skin in elevators.
one of the messages: “marked her down. can’t think of a world where her appoint isn’t on the inside of every elevator in raleigh.”
berry’s fundraising drew some evaluation this year when the observer disclosed that much of her campaign money came from companies her department regulates. while some council campaigns are financed by public funds, berry opposes state funding, calling it “advantage for politicians.”
