Driver Who Crashed Into Solly’s Operating Without Licenses
an arrest is undecided for the driver who crashed his hack into solly’s tavern last continually, an accident that caused discrete minor injuries and opened up a derange in the u street corner bar. according to a police report, afework berhane, a 42-year-getting on in years driver from northwest, faces arrest for operating a car with a suspended driver’s license and for hacking (operating a taxi) without a license.
Berhane could not give a statement to police or recall what had happened when they arrived at the scene of the accident. The officer leading the investigation cited a “medical emergency of an unknown nature” as the reason for the accident. Unable to provide further information, Berhane was admitted to George Washington Hospital, where he is still being treated as of this writing. Hospital officials could not say whether he would be released directly into police custody.
Berhane’s Maryland driver’s license was suspended in March 2008. His District of Columbia Taxicab Commission face-identification card expired January 31, 2008. There were no insurance records in his car at the time of the accident.
Eileen Naples of Arlington had stepped into the cab at the northeast corner of 11th and U Streets NW and was waiting for her cousin to get in when Berhane peeled off in a diagonal direction across the intersection. Doctors believe that Naples broke her nose but she says she is otherwise alright. She could not say what caused the accident. “The door was still open,” she says. “I didn’t even have time to react.”
Four friends who were sitting in the bar’s window nook facing 11th Street were taken to area hospitals. Though all four of them were assumed to have broken bones, x-rays revealed that their injuries were limited to bruises and lacerations.
“I was basically pinned up against the car and the building,” says Mariel Wiswell, one of the four sitting in the window. “We think it’s a miracle that nothing was broken and that we’re still here. You don’t hear about people living through something like this.”
Her boyfriend, Eric Backus, says that he nicked an artery in his right leg that was still bleeding. All four Northwest residents have been released from medical care.
Wiswell said that she and others could see Berhane experiencing what appeared to be seizure-like symptoms in the cab. “Out of nowhere, this loud crash—and everything was in slow motion. The accelerator was still on,” she recalls. “He was seizing still on the scene.”
A woman who picked up the call at the company listed as the taxicab’s owner said that she did not speak English and did not comment further.
Although the bar now has a new and unsolicited east entryway, that will not prevent Solly’s from opening for Saturday night. The bar will open at download thriller movies 6 p.m. tonight and intends to keep normal business hours open for the duration of repairs.

At least 50 people died in Kenya after an overturned petrol tanker caught fire and exploded.
Reports say the fire broke out after hundreds of people gathered to collect the spilt fuel in the town of Molo.
Dozens of people have also been injured in the blaze. Officials say the death toll is expected to rise.
The cause of the fire is not clear - some reports said it was caused by a lit cigarette, but others said it had been started deliberately.
“The people went to scoop up the oil, then something lit the fire, maybe someone dropped a cigarette,” Kenya Red Cross spokesman Titus Mung’ou told Reuters.
One eyewitness told the Nation newspaper that it had been lit by people whom the police had prevented from getting the petrol.
The newspaper criticised what it said was a slow official response to the fire, which was still reported to be burning several hours later.
“The Nakuru Municipal Council’s fire engine arrived at the scene more than an hour after the explosion,” said the newspaper, adding that Molo itself has no fire engine.
The incident comes just days after a devastating fire at a supermarket in the Kenyan capital Nairobi killed at least 25 people.

Joe Biden apologizes this time for swipe at Chief Justice Roberts
Vice President Joe Biden has apologized for cracking a joke at the expense of Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., referring to the fact that the chief justice, in his first inauguration, reordered the words in the presidential oath of office.
During a swearing in for senior White House staff last week, Biden snarked, “My memory is not as good as Chief Justice Roberts’.”
President Obama looked chagrined and even pulled Biden gently at the elbow. Not a good sign.
As the Ticket noted last week, Biden held his first gaffe until the administration’s first full day in office. Biden called the chief justice to apologize for his sarcastic remark and the vice president’s spokesman said they had “a good conversation.”

Sometimes in Washington a gaffe is the crime of getting caught for telling the truth. Biden trackers know it is not the first time the genial Delaware politician has had to eat his words.
During the campaign, he famously told voters that an Obama administration would be tested by a foreign enemy within the first few months of the administration, as John Kennedy was in the 1960s.
“Mark my words,” the Democratic vice presidential nominee warned during a fundraiser in Seattle in October. “It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking. We’re about to elect a brilliant 47-year-old senator president of the United States of America. Remember I said it standing here if you don’t remember anything else I said. Watch, we’re gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy … And he’s gonna need help.”
And on his first day as a declared candidate for president, Biden said of Obama that he was “the first mainstream African American presidential candidate who is articulate and bright and clean-cut and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that’s a storybook, man.” This did not sit well with some black leaders — like Rev. Jesse Jackson — who thought they were mainstream and pretty good looking too.
