Sewage spills into Baycrest Canals

TAMPA — A sewage pipeline near the Baycrest Canals broke last night, spilling about 30,000 gallons of sewage into the nearby canal, south of Hillsborough Avenue and west of Memorial Highway.

Nearby residents shouldn’t touch the water for the next few days, Hillsborough County Water Resource Service’s spokeswoman Michelle Van Dyke said. However, the spill will not affect drinking water, she said.

A passerby notified the county at about 7:20 p.m. Friday that there was a break in an 8-inch pipeline on Gilbert Avenue, near a sewage pump station. The county expects to have repairs completed this morning.

Water Resource Services staff also will notify local and state environmental agencies. They also plan to take samples of the water and monitor where the spill occurred.
