Post Election Wrap up = State by State= Alaska
fly me to wasilla. sarah from alaska. ted, the senator, voting proxy from cubicle lump d. don young, lasting detailed in the bagnio.
Begich’s lead in polls should have been taken with a grain of salt. I was just reminded of Tony Knowles leading Lisa Murkowski in every Senate poll days before the election. Murkowski won by 5 points. Also Palin definitely helped Stevens and Young.
Absentee votes must still be counted in Alaska and Stevens may get carted off to the big house before we know the results. Begich still could narrowly win.
Mudflats, a premier Alaska political blog, gives us a number of reasons that Stevens was re-elected. Alaksa, more than anyplace in the country, is loyal to their patriarchal politicians who bring a lot of pork to their state. They feel like Stevens and Young are family and have voted for them in every election. Why stop now. The bigger question may be what does Sarah Palin do next. She could run in a special election for the Senate seat or she could gear up for a 2012 primary run. The verdict is out. Do not underestimate her as a national player for the Republican party. She certainly awoke the conservative base.
If Begich eeks out victory, Alaska has made a courageous call. If not then we still live to see another day and will keep fighting in two years against Don Young. Don’t believe for a second he won’t face opposition.
I’ve learned that Alaska polling is always off and that you don’t get rid of an incumbent that easy.
I thought Begich running a low profile race might have helped him. Maybe he should have been more aggressive in going after Stevens and the corruption issue.
