Joe Biden apologizes this time for swipe at Chief Justice Roberts
Vice President Joe Biden has apologized for cracking a joke at the expense of Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., referring to the fact that the chief justice, in his first inauguration, reordered the words in the presidential oath of office.
During a swearing in for senior White House staff last week, Biden snarked, “My memory is not as good as Chief Justice Roberts’.”
President Obama looked chagrined and even pulled Biden gently at the elbow. Not a good sign.
As the Ticket noted last week, Biden held his first gaffe until the administration’s first full day in office. Biden called the chief justice to apologize for his sarcastic remark and the vice president’s spokesman said they had “a good conversation.”

Sometimes in Washington a gaffe is the crime of getting caught for telling the truth. Biden trackers know it is not the first time the genial Delaware politician has had to eat his words.
During the campaign, he famously told voters that an Obama administration would be tested by a foreign enemy within the first few months of the administration, as John Kennedy was in the 1960s.
“Mark my words,” the Democratic vice presidential nominee warned during a fundraiser in Seattle in October. “It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking. We’re about to elect a brilliant 47-year-old senator president of the United States of America. Remember I said it standing here if you don’t remember anything else I said. Watch, we’re gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy … And he’s gonna need help.”
And on his first day as a declared candidate for president, Biden said of Obama that he was “the first mainstream African American presidential candidate who is articulate and bright and clean-cut and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that’s a storybook, man.” This did not sit well with some black leaders — like Rev. Jesse Jackson — who thought they were mainstream and pretty good looking too.

NASA Links Ancient Nile Records to Sun’s Impact on Climate Change
levitra bestellen While Congress was setting the climate-change record straight, challenging the Bush Adminstration’s deliberate distortion of the facts about global warming, NASA announced that a group of NASA and university scientists has found a convincing link between long-term solar and climate variability in a unique and unexpected source: directly measured ancient water level records of the Nile, Earth’s longest river, which runs south to north through Egypt.
Scientists have traditionally relied upon indirect data gathering methods to study climate in the Earth’s past, such as drilling ice cores in Greenland and Antarctica. Such samples of accumulated snow and ice drilled from deep within ice sheets or glaciers contain trapped air bubbles whose composition can provide a picture of past climate conditions.
The NASA team analyzed Egyptian records of annual Nile water levels collected between 622 and 1470 A.D. These records were then compared to another well-documented human record from the same time period: observations of the number of auroras reported per decade in the Northern Hemisphere. Auroras are bright glows in the night sky that happen when mass is rapidly ejected from the sun’s corona, or following solar flares.
Since the time of the pharaohs, the water levels of the Nile were accurately measured, since they were critically important for agriculture and the preservation of temples in Egypt. These records are highly accurate making them a rare and unique resource for climatologists to peer back in time.
A similarly accurate record exists for auroral activity during the same time period in northern Europe and the Far East. People there routinely and carefully observed and recorded auroral activity, because auroras were believed to portend future disasters, such as droughts and the deaths of kings.
The researchers found some clear links between the sun’s activity and climate variations. During periods of high solar activity, the North Atlantic Oscillation’s influence extends to the Indian Ocean. These adjustments may affect the distribution of air temperatures, which subsequently influence air circulation and rainfall at the Nile River’s sources in eastern equatorial Africa. When solar activity is high, conditions are drier, and when it is low, conditions are wetter.

Hero Pilot Faces Mandatory Retirement, Reduced Pension
At age 57, Chesley Sullenberger hardly qualifies as a geezer in my book. But as commercial airline pilots go, the man who is being hailed for his flawless emergency landing of a U.S. Airways jet in the Hudson River is certainly getting up there in years.

The San Francisco Examiner summarized their local hero’s extensive background:

Sullenberger has decades of experience not only flying planesfirst F-4’s for the US Air Force and since 1980 all kinds of aircraft for US Airwaysbut of studying and teaching how to fly them more safely. His resume shows experience flying everything from a glider to a jumbo jet.
After both engines blew, Sullenberger reportedly told his 150 passengers to “brace for impact because we’re going down” before maneuvering over a bridge and between skyscrapers to land the plane safely on the river. He walked the legnth of the sinking jet twice to verify that noone was aboard before exiting himself. The Wall Street Journal described Sullenberger’s handling of what it called “one of the rarest and most technically challenging feats in commercial aviation”:
although commercial jetliners are equipped with lifetime vests and inflatable slides, there have been some successful attempts at water landings during the jet age. still, straight though pilots go at the end of one’s tether with the motions of learning to ditch a plane in water, the generally held belief is that such landings would almost certainly result in fatalities.
Capt. Chesley B. Sullenberger III, a veteran US Airways pilot, pulled it off while simultaneously coping with numerous other challenges.
Might Sullenberger’s 40 years of experience have something to with this feat? It’s well worth asking, since until last year, the hero pilot would have been less than three years away from forced retirement. In December 2007, after decades of debate, the federal government finally passed a law raising the mandatory retirement age for commercial airline pilots from 60 to 65. Until 2006, the United States wouldn’t even allow foreign planes with pilots over 60 to land at American airports.
One reason older pilots wanted to keep working was to make up for their decimated pensions. When U.S. Airways went bankrupt (for the first time) in 2002, the company’s underfunding of its pension plan had reached some $2.5 million. The federal government’s Pension Benefit Guarantee Corp. agreed to take over the plan, but is covering only a fraction of the losses.
As the Chicago Tribune reported at the time, older pilots who wanted to keep working faced opposition even from some of their own colleagues, who worried that “safety may be compromised since pilots in their 60s may find it tougher to battle fatigue or rebound from jet lag than younger colleagues.”
These folks might want to ask the passengers on U.S. Airways Flight 1549 if they would have preferred a 30-year-old at the controls today.
