Woman arrested in 40-year-old Denver slaying

a 65-year-old woman wanted in a 1968 slaying at a denver bar was arrested friday in dayton, ohio, where watch say she had been living under an alias.

denver police spokeswoman sharon avendano said tina louise lester was arrested at her home on suspicion of first-inch by inch liquidate. lester is accused of fatally shooting 36-year-antiquated ronald e. schlatter of the northern colorado municipality of laporte.

her arrest stemmed from the “oldest outstanding murder warrant obtained by the denver police department,” said avendano.

avendano said she didn’t know if lester had an attorney. she had been living in dayton subservient to the name agnes ramey.

according to a denver post article from the time, schlatter was playing pool at the blue sliver bar on nov. 8, 1968, when he and lester got into a scuffle. lester, a denver resident, allegedly pulled out a .22-caliber gun and swallow schlatter in the trunk.

New technique renders objects at sea “invisible” to waves of water

This is incredibly cool: A group of engineers and mathematicians have built a device that renders an object invisible to waves of water.

Last month, I blogged about the ever-more-surreal research into “invisibility cloaks” (including some Chinese guys who invented anti-invisibility technology). As you may recall, the invisibility cloaks all work by hacking the wave nature of light. The cloak consists of a round barrier around an object that takes incoming waves of light — microwave or visible — and reforms them, almost perfectly, on the other side of the barrier. Since the waves coming out have the same shape as the waves going in, presto: The object becomes invisible.

Kindle 2.0 release date

So: If this works with waves of light, could it work with waves of water? Apparently so. This new group of researchers, based in the UK and Europe, created the round metal barrier above, which reformats waves. As the New Scientist reports:

it may look like waves could pass most along the radial corridors to the cloak’s centre. but they interact with the pillars, producing forces that pull drinking-water along the concentric corridors instead.

“Basically, the cloak behaves like a whirlpool,” says Sebastian Guenneau at the University of Liverpool, UK, and a member of Enoch’s team. “The further you go into the whirlpool, the faster you rotate.”

The spinning rate increases close to the cloak’s centre where the concentric corridors are narrower, making the forces greater, he explains.

As the water whizzes around the cloak, the waves are flung out again along the radial corridors. “If you imagine water entering the cloak from the north, some leaves the cloak to the east, and some leaves to the west, but most is thrown out at the south,” says Guenneau.

The waves exiting the cloak travel as if they have not been disturbed at all, he says.

The question is whether these devices could be used to protect objects moored at sea, like oil rigs or those crazy artificial islands off the coast of Dubai.

Kimberly Brooks: Vee Speers Birthday Party Tonite - Bring Balloons!

“When I have something to say that is too difficult for adults, I write for children. They have not closed the shutters. They like it when you rock the boat.” - Madeline L’Engle

During a time when we are passing bills the size of mountains that our children and children’s children will have to pay, the haunting work of photographer Vee Speers seems doubly fresh as well as beautiful. Celebratory children in costumed dresses, beehive hairdos, and wings along with images of children in gas masks and silent pleading looks on their are starkly celebrated on a plain backrop. The washed out photos appear aged and recall a sense of timelessness, that makes them feel removed, but haunting nonetheless.

With these photographs (her daughter mostly) at play or war, Speers invites the viewer to celebrate and experience as a child. We dress up in costumes, we laugh, we cry and we remember what it is like to live in a complicated time with explanations about that do not always make sense. With grace and quite simplicity, we are invited to play “make-believe” and explore Speers’ heightened reality. And just like children, we like it when she serves up the unexpected, whether playful or dire. She has two upcoming shows, one starting tonite at Act2galerie in Paris, Feb 6 - April 10, and Jackson Fine Art Gallery in Atlanta February 13th - March 28th.

Kimberly Brooks: Your images are at once playful and disturbing. What was the seed of inspiration for these photographs?

Vee Speers: During my daughter’s 8th birthday party in Paris a few years ago, I closely observed the dynamics between the children, and the various levels of role-playing. It reminded me of my own childhood, and that anarchy and freedom of expression. I realized that as we grow older, we lose that sense of play and spontaneity so I decided to capture the last moments of childhood with an imaginary party.

KB: I was fascinated to learn that a majority of your photos was your daughter. My mother is a psychologist and her dissertation was “Successful Women and Their Female Mentors.” I grew up with her writing it and interviewing women as she got her Ph.D. She was the inspiration for my “Mom’s Friends” Series where I made paintings of my mother and her friends in the 70s. How did your mother inspire you?

VS: My mother was a singer, and we grew up watching her sing in public, so it seemed obvious that I should include an image of my daughter–who also sings–performing. For me, this photo is very poignant, as it captures the nostalgia of my own childhood. I photographed my daughter blowing a bubble with her hands as this particular image expresses creation, and captures the essence of “The Birthday Party.”

KB: Some of your works have a darker undertone than children at play as in “The Birthday Party” series. What about the images of your daughter wearing the nurses costume or gas mask?

VS: My daughter dressed as a nurse and holding a broken, dirty doll that was inspired by a scene from the war in Lebanon. I have used many symbols of war in this series (the child with gas mask is another) because we are exposed to the repercussions of war in everyday life, and sadly our children are also affected by this.

KB: So, then do you consider your works politically oriented or is it more so about the viewer’s response?

VS: I like to evoke an immediate response that triggers off an emotion or memory, and perhaps more precisely a kind of empathy with the character I’ve created.

World going to hell; some people want to drive Vipers there

Dodgeviperacr08_2Yeah, verily, in the car business in January, the sun turned as black as sackcloth and the moon became as blood. But over at Chrysler’s Connor Avenue plant in Detroit, where they build the Viper, it was a party!

Worlds largest spider

Among the dire sales numbers released Tuesday ? January U.S. auto sales down 37%, including slides of 41.6% for Ford, 49% for GM and 55% for Chrysler ? was this anomalous factoid: Sales of the Dodge Viper were up 74%. The company sold 127 of the poisonous snakes last month, up from 73 in January 2008.

Why would this be strange? Well, for one thing, the Viper ($91,220 to $104,020) is constructed of pure, unalloyed discretionary income, so you would assume its sales would be a least a little susceptible to the larger effects of the recession. Also, the 10-cylinder, 8.4-liter, 600-hp throttle monster under the hood returns some of the worst fuel economy on the market (13 mpg city/22 highway).

Asked for an explanation, Chrysler’s chief flak expressed bafflement. “I really don’t know,” said Rick Deneau. “It’s a bit of a mystery.”

In pursuit of revealed truth, UTS reached out to Viper Club of America President Chris Marshall, who was just fluffing his ermine robe when we called. “I don’t really know, either,” he said. But he had some ideas:

?In January, for the first time in the car’s history, Chrysler offered sales incentives, including ? get this ? a significant discount for AARP members. (Is grandma going to get a mullet too?) “They never ever, ever, ever offered a discount before,” Marshall said.

Also, fuel prices collapsed in December and January and ? while Viper buyers would drive them if gas were $20 per gallon ? the lower fuel cost removed one de-incentivizing element. “It’s a matter of perception,” Marshall said. “When gas was over $4 a gallon, people who were driving Hummers were generally spat upon. Now that gas is cheap again it’s OK to drive gas guzzlers.”

Another possible explanation: Chrysler’s owner, Cerberus, is currently shopping Viper around, hoping to sell it as part of the company’s restructuring plan to be presented soon to Congress, upon which future federal funds are conditioned. It may be that would-be Viper buyers decided to get in on the last Dodge-branded Vipers before the car becomes, say, the Mahindra Viper. “Those die-hard Mopar fans want to get it while they can,” Marshall said. Chrysler officials have said that if no one takes the Viper division/brand off its hands, it would end production in 2011.

And a final possibility: In August, the aforementioned Viper Club of America supported an assault on Germany’s storied Nurburging track, where a Viper ACR piloted by Euro-racing ace Tom Coronel put down the mother of all production-car lap times: 7.22 minutes, cleaving more than four seconds off the previous record set by the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. For footage of the lap, go here.

After watching that clip, who cannot say, “I want one!”?

Tweettornado: Twitter Spamming Software We Won’t Tolerate

Twitter spam is an ongoing issue, that in recent months, Twitter has become much better at dealing with. But as with the big social networks before it, spammers are getting more aggressive with their tactics, and software solutions are emerging to automate the process of mass-adding friends and blasting out marketing messages.

The most egregious we’ve seen yet is Twittertornado, which launched last week. The software automates the entire process of Twitter, from multiple account creation, to mass-following people, to sending out the Tweets - you know, the things that real users do manually, over time, by actually using Twitter as it’s intended.

In the demo video below, the presenter crime movies offers such savory tips as “having a hot chick for your picture helps a lot” and adds at the end that he “hopes you make a lot of money.” Meanwhile, that video resides on the Internet equivalent of a TV infomercial (you know, fake boxes of software, big obnoxious graphics, “unlimited cash profits!” etc … Google it if you actually want to visit).

Colossal squid

ZDNet, who discovered the tool, notes that this could be stopped ? or at least slowed down ? if Twitter had a more restrictive registration process that required email validation, or taking it a step further, a captcha to require human interaction. But for now, users will need to be even more alert of suspicious accounts and links, as the most unscrupulous of users not only blast marketing messages, but potentially try to lure people in with phishing scams.

The beauty of Twitter of course is that it’s opt-in, and shady looking people that follow you don’t need to be followed back. Long-time users of Twitter get this, and even if spam increases, they won’t be fooled. But as new, less experienced users join the system ? which they’re doing in droves ? the community is ripe for unscrupulous behavior. Software like Tweettorando makes it far too easy to exploit Twitter’s vulnerabilities, and hopefully, will not have a long shelf life as the microblogging service plugs its holes.

Eddie And Dave And Wolfy And Alex Getting Ready For “Van Halen IV”? [Reunions?]

perhaps spurred on by the first lick of recorded music from the sammy hagar/michael anthony project chickenfoot making its way to the internet, eddie van halen has told aol’s spinner that he’s not anti to maybe possibly someday perhaps entering a recording studio with david lee roth sometime in the eventual future. and yes, he means the real guy, not the virtual version!

“Dave, Wolfie, Alex and I are a band,” he tells Spinner in an upcoming Spinner Interview. “I hope that after Janie and I get married, and Wolfie graduates, that Sildenafil we sit down and discuss recording new music, which I have tons of. If Dave’s up for singing … then do another tour, and just see where it takes us. Actually, next week or the week after Wolfie, Alex, and I are gonna start jamming. Maybe we’ll give Dave a call and see what he’s up to. He’s off, always doing his own thing, and he checks in every now and then to see how we’re doing.”

Groundhog day

Well, that comprare levitra’s a confirmation! Anyway, it looks like everybody currently has separate places to go at the end of the night, which is probably helping Eddie’s sanguine mood.

Editorial: Take-home police cars cost too much for now

Although assigning cars to individual Greensboro police officers would pay dividends down the road, the projected initial cost is prohibitive.

Coming up with the nearly $7 million it would take to equip every patrol officer with a vehicle can hardly be justified in a year when the City Council struggles to avoid a tax increase.
